    Ruptured Achilles

I ruptured my achilles last night. I'm going in for surgery tomorrow. Just looking for any information about recovery times from anyone who's had that done.

Ouch. I'm sure that couldn't have felt very good. Good luck on your surgery and recovery!

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

Ouch. I don't now a lot about that one specifically. Do you already have a rehab center? The PT I saw for my knee, her husband ruptured his Achilles as I was getting "done" rehabbing my injury. I'd recommend her or any of those rehab centers.

If you don't have one lined up, PM me and I can get you the info.

Regardless of what you do - listen to the PT. Stretch, stretch and stretch some more. Do your exercises exactly as prescribed. And of course, lots of elevation and ice.

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

Jon Davis tore his in spring practice (March?) and made it back for practice in August. His recovery was considered remarkable as normal expectation was supposed to be sometime mid-season with extensive rehab.

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

Also, what kind of rupture was it? From rupture I gather it was complete. Torn notes it probably wasn't complete.

Big difference in the type of surgery and rehab duration.

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

Sorry to hear about that! I had an achilles incident in middle school. But mine wasn't ruptured... it was nearly severed. Fortunately, it was a clean cut, repaired in surgery and was back to normal within 3 months or so. I bet the recovery time for a rupture is quite a bit longer though... Better get used to those crutches. Keep us updated too.

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

My sister's fiancee either tore or ruptured his achilles a couple of years ago. I think he was out of commission in some way or another for 4-6 months. Details are a little fuzzy b/c a)I didn't really know the guy at the time and b) they were at school in Virginia.

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

Somewhat unrelated but should give you a general idea.

I ruptured a ligament in my ankle one summer in July. It was September before I was off crutches and January/February until it was fully healed. But atleast it makes a cracking noise when I bend it now! Atleast you have that to look forward to

really sorry to hear that, nothing about injuries is fun...like 22 said, no matter HOW MUCH it hurts at the time, stretch, stretch, and stretch in the rehab and listen to your PT. Good luck buddy!

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

i would agree with follow the exact insturctions of the PT. I completely ruptured mine too in middle school. i was on crutches for 4 months, back to somewhat normal after 6 total. i think i was a bad case...only took 1 surgery but it wasnt a clean break.

    Re: Ruptured Achilles

One of my friends tore his achille's tendon at the Drake Relays last year. He had surgery pretty much the next day, and he was back on his feet (on crutches) after a few days, but had the crutches for quite a while. He ended up tearing it again doing his rehab in the pool, so he had to go in for surgery again, but he's back walking normally now, and in a few weeks, they said he can attempt a little running.
