Agree with others, would much rather give you $10 cash to the cause, than give you $35 order for $10 worth of stale chocolate, of which the school gets $5 cut.

Re: School fundraisers are the worst ...

I went to a catholic school and we had fundraisers for our band trips and one school-wide fund raiser. For the all school fundraiser we had to bring in a minimum of $100 so I saved my allowance and bought all $100 worth of raffle tickets because I was so embarrassed to ask people for money. I never had a problem with the band fundraiser because that helped the less fortunate kids pay for their plane tickets, etc.

Not a school fundraiser complaint but:

I am tired of Boy Scout popcorn sales, Girl Scout cookie sales, etc... where the parents are the ones actually doing the selling. You can't walk into a Target, WalMart, Sams Club, etc... without being confronted by somebody trying to sell you something and unfortunately, I see the parents asking more than the actual kids.

Another is when you walk into your work break room and there are sign-up sheets that parents left on the table or taped up on the door asking people to buy things.

I am actually OK with the kids knocking on my door and I usually buy too b/c if the kid worked hard to walk door to door and makes an effort to sell, then I'll help them out and buy.

On the weekends I try to get into the store early enough that no one has set up their fundraising table yet. I can't stand getting accosted when going to the store. Sometimes I'll just give the kids a couple of dollars donation.

I think Girl Scouts get something like 25 cents for each box of those overpriced cookies.

All this teaches kids anymore is to let your parents do it. Of course it would be difficult nowadays to let your kid go door to door. Too many weirdos out there.

I have purchased Girl Scout Cookies many, many times over the years and I don't ever recall ever actually buying them from a kid. It is always the girl's parents which is a friend or co-worker of mine. I just find it amusing that the parents seem to be the ones pushing the cookies and I am not sure how much the kids actually do.

I don't think they encourage the girls to sell door to door any more. On Co-Worker told me that they changed the cookie ordering system too. They have to pre-order X amount of cookies and then go to people to get the cookies sold. I always enjoyed seeing how many I could sell until I had my license and mom said I had to deliver ALL of them myself. *but we did get changes made for the older girls so they might sell cookies like setting up a summer trip or being able to use cookie points for wider-ops (travelling out of state or country).

Re: School fundraisers are the worst ...

What is sad is people are still getting roped into these... it is like every store asking if you want to donate a dollar to some cause... I see way to many people uncomfortable with "no." There is no guilt to it. It is just peer pressure (which schools constantly preach is a bad thing). I also never saw anything actually happen with the money that gets given in these fundraisers. I am one that will give to a particular thing "hey we want to buy ____ for the kids to help their education. Would you give us money?" Answer... "Yes, here is a check"

I am of the opinion that friends don't try to sell things to each other (see tupperware parties, basket parties, cleaning crap parties). School fundraisers are just a crappy way to start people down that path. "Hey, maybe I could make a living selling candles to people I know!"
