The original Cyclone football team of 1895 had some wild stories to tell

For our feature story this week, we discussed some of the fun stories of the team: destroying a hotel, getting stuck in the snow on a road trip and running out of food, using hair as padding, being treated by the black Leonardo and more.

My favorite tidbit was an offense play where the linemen stood back, grabbed the running back, and threw him over the line of scrimmage pile. Upon hitting the ground, the back rolled until stopped. Maybe the team can try that against Oklahoma this weekend?

Yes, there's even a referee controversy...

I didn't know Pop Warner coached at ISU. His Wikipedia page should be edited. There might not be football today if he hadn't come up with safer rules for the game.

    His wikipedia page does say:

The NCAA credits Warner with a career football coaching record of 319–106–32. The College Football Data Warehouse gives him one fewer win with the Carlisle Indians in 1908 for a career record of 318–106–32. Neither includes the five seasons at Iowa State (1895–1899) during which time Warner co-coached the Cyclones to a record of 18–8 while he simultaneously coached at three other schools.

Josh: Was there any mention of the letters fans used prior to the internets...sending them around to each other asking for Pop Warner to be fired, playing mafia, and looking forward to basketball season in a few decades?

I remember one year some idiot was calling for Pop Warners job when the team only put up 12 points. They wanted someone else to call plays.

Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

What does it feel like to score 12 points on offensive? They were living high on the hog back then.

If only you knew how heated Coach's weekly telegram-in show got . . . there was a vocal subset of fans who questioned the 100% ticket price increase and whether the long-rumored renovation of the end zone--then covered in sheep poop--would ever happen. Others bemoaned Warner's inability to match the heady heights of the undefeated 1891 season when the Cyclones finished 1 - 0.

Re: The original Cyclone football team of 1895 had some wild stories to tell

“The ball was not down until the player carrying it, yelled ‘down,’ whereupon the referee would blow his whistle. German was so small that on one occasion, a hefty tackler threw him over his shoulder and carried him back 35 yards or so. All the while German was yelling ‘down,’ but the referee apparently did not hear him and certainly did not heed the cries.”

I see Zebras haven't changed much over the years.

Quoting myself to note I corrected the segment that referred to ISU playing Nebraska in 1891, which was false. I triple-checked and it was actually Iowa that played Nebraska in 1891 and I have to say, for being such a legendary journalist, Sec Taylor got an awful lot of basic facts wrong in this article series. But then, he didn't have the Internet. With just a few clicks, I was able to read the 1891 Hesperian student newspaper of Nebraska that confirmed the Hawkeye team.
