Anyone else think we are under-ranked?

I have looked at the NCAA RPI rankings and the coaches rankings and am beginning to wonder if we are not being punished a bit too harshly for some losses, and not being recognized for more recent play.

We have 6 losses so far this season, and of those losses, maybe one was a bad loss. We lost of San Diego (currently ranked 14th), Illinois (18th), St. Mary's (51st - the bad one), Nebraska (8th), Oklahoma (21st) and Texas (1st). We have also beaten some quality teams, like Oklahoma (21st) and Kansas (13th). We have beaten teams we should have beaten (with some exceptions) but even the loss to OK was in their house and we went 5 sets. I am not suggesting we are Top 10 by any means, but 23rd, behind Oklahoma and Kansas seems a bit tough to accept.

    Thoughts?

Re: Anyone else think we are under-ranked?

I am quite surprised that we did not move ahead of Oklahoma in RPI considering we swept them and they lost to both Kansas and Kstate whom we have recently beaten.

I don't think we get much respect in the Coach's Poll by coaches not in our conference/on our schedule. We just don't have the "brand name" reputation of schools like Texas/PSU/Nebraska that help them stay in the rankings even if they aren't performing well.

I wouldn't even say that losing to the RPI ranked 51st team is a bad loss. It would not be if this were men's or women's basketball.

Good news is that they have a couple more shots at really impressive wins, which could result in a big jump in the RPI.

Re: Anyone else think we are under-ranked?

Yeah in not really sure how we fell out of the coaches poll after 2 sweeps this week (especially 1 over a decent team) I get that Illinois had good wins and are in the B1G.

I think we should've taken KU's place in the rankings... We lost several votes the week we lost @UT and they moved up?!

All said and done I like our chances to finish in top 25. Maybe even sneak in there with a seed if we take down the horns at home.

yeah, I really, really did not get the voting on that. KU should not have moved up.

I always believe we are under-rated. We are constantly demeaned by the powers that be. If we weren't so persecuted, I would not feel at home in Iowa. It gives us good incentive to upset people.

Re: Anyone else think we are under-ranked?

Biggest problem this year is the B12 in very weak. After the first four, the rest of the league is very soft - the top four are 35-10 in the league, bottom six 15-40. In the past, we've had five or six teams competing for NCAA spots, will be lucky to get four in this year.

I don't know the ins and outs of Illinois's schedule, but I have a hard time swallowing a .500 team (12-12) being ranked.

Playing Nebraska, PSU, Minnesota, whichever Michigan is good, and WI have hurt them. Besides Texas, none of our conference opponents are as good as those schools (save maybe Michigan State and Kansas being similarly ranked). I'm not arguing that IL should be ranked, but the BIG beat up on themselves quite a bit. Looking at their schedule from the last 10 days or so, they beat #13, #16, #17, and lost to #11. We did gain quite a few points (something like 62 to 144 this week), but IL is making quite the case for themselves.

This is why CJL puts the team through the ringer in pre-conference scheduling.

Agreed. Illinois, with a 12-12 record, being #18 in the RPI this week is a bit hard to take, regardless of schedule.

Re: Anyone else think we are under-ranked?

This week's AVCA rankings make absolutely no sense. At the same time that we move to #23 in RPI, sweeping the #21 RPI team (OU) and having previously beaten the #13 RPI team (KU) at their place, to drop out of the AVCA rankings is crazy. I had given more credibility to volleyball coaches rankings than to women's basketball coaches rankings, but maybe neither deserve much attention.

A lot of the rankings have to do with point distribution. We were ranked #25 last week with only 62 points. This week, we were not ranked, but got 144 points. So, we actually got "more" votes than last week, but there are less RV teams, so the points are more compacted. Illinois jumped 150 points though, which is a lot in one week.

Re: Anyone else think we are under-ranked?

I really liked what I saw last Saturday. We're playing well. I think we're a team that's peaking right now, and that fits our schedule well. I really wish that KU and UT were on Saturday's. The crowd last weekend was great and I think the girls responded to that. I hope the students can get behind the team for these home matches and carry us into the post season. If we win, the rest will take care of itself. IMO The only danger in being looked over in selection rankings is playing somebody on their home court in the tourney, when you know you're a better team. That's how upsets happen, and you don't realize your potential.

Great win tonight. We made them look pretty ineffective on their home court, and got stronger as the match went on. What the eff was Jill Kramer wearing tonight, though? That looked straight out of Mad Max, kind of a post-apocalyptic survivor chic.

I don't see anything anywhere about Hudson's injury. How long is she out?

Doubt they'll talk about it much, but Goetz played great after the first set. Couldn't tell much was different. Hopefully it's not serious.
