Very interesting article. What most interested me was this quote from Coach Douglas:
I would have started [Tribune] in the first game, but I didn't get the word from the boss that I could start him, until, you know ...
Rhoads must have vetoed Douglas on the first game.

Think Givens red-shirted as a JUCO though. We are severely missing him this year btw - doesn't get mentioned much.

Don't care if they were JUCOs (Givens came here a true JR anyway, left a RS SR. He redshirted at ISU), Reynolds DID redshirt (at ISU as well), and you're right about Benton, but having Benton one more year would have been nice anyway, although it does not fit the specific point there anymore.

Nothing in that article makes me feel any better about him playing.

[Tribune's] got to develop physically. He needs the weight room bad. He's skinny, but his 180-some odd pounds. He'll be I guarantee you [strength coach Yancy] McKnight will put on at least 15 to 20 pounds. He'll be 195-, 200-pound corner. He'll be a grown man by the time he leaves here.

I don't question his talent or ability. If we beat UNI I wonder if he is still redshirted. No reason to panic, we are 2-1 after Tulsa, and by then it might be too late for the coaches to consider burning the RS.

Tribune is bigger than Watson. Considering Watson is the best corner on this team your assertion that Tribune needs to get into the weight room and physically develop doesn't seem valid to me. You already said that you don't question his talent and ability, and he is now larger than our current best cornerback. So, what do you think is left that he needs to redshirt for?

That quote is from his DB coach, so I would say it is pretty valid. His own coach said he needs to develop physically and that it holds him back. "He needs to get in the weight room bad"

Broomfield has been serviceable in his absence.

At one point Givens led the nation in takeaways which ended up earning him All-Big 12 honors. Not bad for a former JUCO off the radar..

I think mentally he needs to improve, but he has the physical tools to be the next LJ!

Givens had 2 INTs in a scrimmage with the Chiefs also. I'm pretty sure he ended last season #1 in the nation in takeaways even though he missed the last couple games with injury.

I actually remember LJ and that entire DBackfield massively blowing assignments consistently, but I agree that LJ showed a ton of promise as a freshman. I guess this is good, but a bit alarming that I think Tribune may have the best ball skills of all our current DBs. I like the combination of SER and Tribune in years to come. Both have pretty good cover skills. SER really needs some work on his ball skills. I love how both of them are more than willing to mix it up and support the run. Let's face it, with our absolutely non-existent pressure on the QB Revis and Sherman would get beat every now and then.
