Re: Rhoads remains high on the future of Nigel Tribune

He must have talent for Rhoads to play him as a true Freshman, but it sure seems like he gets beaten like a rented mule more often than not.

I just remember hearing time and time again this August how good he looked in those closed scrimmages. He showed them something alright.

I like him a lot from what I have seen. I think he gets beat at times by guessing wrong or biting on the first move, which is something I have been seeing all over the field on defense this year with the youth.

Long as they keep his confidence up from the beaten mule thing, he seems like a guy that can work out.

Re: Rhoads remains high on the future of Nigel Tribune

Love what Tribune is going to bring as a player for us in the future, hate pulling his redshirt 3 games into the season.

Trading 5/6 of a year of the worst football of his career for a year of what would be presumably his best year of his career.

I don't blame the coaches for doing it, as losing the first two games obviously brings about more of a "win now" mentality, but the only positive that will come from this move is the in game experience Tribune gains for next year. The move would make a lot more sense and still can make a lot more sense, provided Tribune can be a major factor in actually getting some wins this year. If we rolled the dice on burning his redshirt in a lost season, I can't say I agree with the decision as someone who is a fan this year and will be a fan in 5 years no matter what.

He played a decent amount against Iowa. UNI is the only game he didn't play this year.

I thought since the Tech game he has looked really solid for a freshmen. He's already one of our best corners this year and will only get better.

Personally, I think it's great he's playing. When an outside the trenches player is good enough to come in and start as a freshmen, you know you got a talented player. Leonard Johnson is a good example. Freshmen skill players start all across the country.

I'm not looking at if he is good enough to start, I am looking at how much better he is than the next guy. The coaches themselves couldn't even list him as the outright #2 corner until I think the Baylor game. He was listed as an OR with Lynn.

And the reason I don't like it is because he is so good. His RS Senior year would be valuable beyond what we are getting from him this year.

The arguments for not RSing the guys like Knott, Klein, Lenz, ect are easy: They helped ISU win a bowl game their freshmen years. Hard to argue against that. But is it really worth it, especially in hindsight, for a 2-3 win season?

I just don't see any benefits outside of experience for next year for Tribune, but I can't say I think that it outweighs the benefits you get from a 5th year.

And again, I understand why the coaches get it. They coach for this year and not for 5 years down the road. They don't want to get fired. But that isn't necessarily what is best for a fan in 5 years when you are going to be a fan either way.

What makes you think there would be any guarantees about a RS senior year? How's that going for Kyle Lichtenberg and Ethan Tuftee?

I mean, I say that entirely aside from the fact that if he's that good, he's not going to be around all that long anyway.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)

    1. "Don't redshirt him he is going pro his junior year" talk is the most ridiculous thing I could possibly think of, and I'm sure you agree.

    2. You're going to pull out two random offensive linemen who were injury plagued for your argument? I'll go ahead and triple that on the other end:

    Jake Mcdonough (HUGE year)
Jansen Watsen (TBD depending on injuries, but unheralded guy becoming #1 cover corner his 5th year)
    Terran Benton (at safety)
    Durrell Givens (HUGE year)
Jesse Smith (All Big 12 LBer)
Darius Reynolds (clear cut #1 WR his SR year)

Just to name a few. That is just players who had a much better year their 5th year than their 4th year. Let alone guys like Osemele, Washington, Scott, Broomfield, Woody, Farniok next year I'm guessing, ect that performed before their senior years but get that extra year to really be a leader on the team and be an integral piece to the puzzle.

I have to be honest and some on here may not feel the same way but I absolutely loved when he took his man to the ground in the endzone and had to be separated. I don't remember the specifics of the play all I remember is thinking that if he wants to be successful in this league against the offenses we play, he is going to need some fire.

That play showed it to me.

Gosh, I must have already been buzzed, but I remember it just the opposite. Tribune got bulldozed into the ground by the OSU WR and got up ****** and ready to throw down.

I liked his textbook defense on a play against OKS. Going downhill at full speed, he turns back to face the ball and put himself between the ball and the defender--at just the right moment. Big improvement (listens to the coaches) over the TU game. Got called (wrongfully)for PI on the play, the Fox announcers (and crowd) were all over it.

This is what I saw too. Impressive development considering that many of our upperclassmen in the secondary still struggle with playing the ball and not the receiver.
