Chris, I am surprised you just realized that Wally installed a defensive scheme that matches his personal.

Re: Podcast: Assessing 1-6; hoops chatter too

Gents good podcast..........the only comment i have is with regard to fans / supporters of the program calling for heads being chopped. The issue is $$$, for the past few years the prices have sky-rocketed as have the salaries these coaches make. I think our fans can handle a loss by 7 points here and there pretty well, but losing to UNI and then the past few weeks losing the way they have is embarassing and not fun to watch.

Jamie Pollard has required the Cyclone Nation to step up and open their pocket books to support this program to take it to the next level, for which I am pleasantly suprised to see them do. HOWEVER, now people need to be held accountable, becuase of the amount of money that is on the line. When you figure out the average donation to get a parking pass, tickets for a family of four, costs of setting up a tailgate.........a family maybe spending $500+ / home game.

This is the evil of college sports today, it has become a billion dollar industry over the past decade and people's attutides have changed. It has become a business and if someone in the business world is not meeting expectations they are shown the door.

Bringing up a funeral within the first minute of the podcast. Sounds like the Cyclones season.

BCS teams should strive for a break even record or better each year since they control their non conference opponents schedule and more than half the games are played at home. To lose so many at home is a good way to lose your audience.

Fair points. Very fair indeed. But if you want to talk straight $$$, then that's one of the many reasons why Paul Rhoads will not get fired. He has, what, a 10 year contract (might be 9 years left after this season)?

I don't think anyone really wants CPR gone........however his program took a nose dive and he probably needs to make some changes to ensure 45K people re-up their season ticket sales. IF ISU finishes 1-11 or 2-10 and brings the coaching staff back in tact, it will be a tough sale............even for Jaime Pollard.

I also think he won't get fired because he is best for ISU. It's not like he is coaching OU or Texas and having a year like this. He is doing his best and we are young. Bad recruiting the first couple years. It happens. It's no like we can expect a bowl game every year at Iowa State.

Slightly different than losing by 64 to Baylor and being 1-6.

Most rationale fans like yourself believe this from what I've seen. And I agree completely with your point. But there is a fringe out there calling for him to be fired right now. My Twitter feed and many posters on this website prove that. To your point though, I agree with you 100 percent and also to that point, I don't think you have to worry about that. If they go 1-11, changes will be made. I really don't think there is much question about that.

Re: Podcast: Assessing 1-6; hoops chatter too

    Great podcast guys.

I'm with you on our linebacker and have noted this in a few threads. You're right that we need Jesse Smith in there - a guy who knows where to be and has some size to put his pads on the opponents. Our positioning has been so bad, pretty much all year, that is just depresses me. Out DL isn't helping out a ton, but this is the worst LB play we've seen since the Wayne Bolt years. The DL needs to not get pushed around so much, but our LBs are just not up to the task this year. Big mistake not taking a December grad JUCO last recruiting cycle.

We're down to watching the young guys develop, unfortunately, at this point. Looking for some improvement in different position groups. Unfortunate for these seniors to go out like this, but I'd like to see them play with some pride from here. The 16-year points effort Blum quoted is stunning - the Dead Bolt defenses gave up less. Discouraging.

Having it happen in a year where the fans, boosters and stakeholders continue to step up to really unprecedented levels makes it feel like God hates the Cyclones. Such a missed opportunity. This fanbase is SO ready to turn the corner, but those responsible for the product are failing. It's situations like this where change is required. At the end of the season, I'm sure there will be changes. I think CPR is a great fit at ISU, but he's being let down by his staff. Changes are needed. They are needed for performance reasons and selling hope. It's part of the business, purging the sins of the past season, and starting fresh. Sports are not unlike a religion in that. You have to give some basis to the faithful to continue to believe and follow.

Keep up the great work, Chris. Can't get enough of Blum - he's obviously got a great wit and keen insight.

    Cheers

Great podcast. You guys were talking about why the scrimmage has to be secret. I wonder if that's so coaches are allowed the freedom to really experiment and not worry about the score. That way they won't have to worry about losing any hype and ticket sales if things look ugly.
