Should cell phones/ipods, etc be banned from use during school?

I see Bondurant schools are banning use of cell phones/ipods, etc during school time. This includes in between classes, lunch, etc as well. They can only be used before or after school. Do you agree with this?

I say no. I don't think they should be banned. But I do think there should be restrictions -- only used during passing time, lunch, etc.

Not familiar with B-F's technology (1:1 school?) but students using their devices in school also provides technology that could be useful/helpful in the classroom (web access).

Cell phones being used to play music or whatever? No. Cell phones used to make phone calls? Sure.

True, but doesn't that exclude students that don't have their own device?

What phone calls would need to be made during the school day that couldn't be made via the office (because I assume you are implying communication with parents)?

But you could have students pair up with those who have a device. Not saying it is great but if 1/3 of the class has a device, they could get in groups of 3 to do a quick internet search for something. Not much more than a band-aid for a lack of technology.

I am just saying that an outright ban seems heavy-handed. There are times when it could be beneficial for students to have web-enabled devices in their possession.

Re: Should cell phones/ipods, etc be banned from use during school?

I don't see any need for cell phones in schools prior to college, and this is coming from a recent college graduate (so not an old fuddy duddy). My high school had a zero-tolerance cell phone policy, it was never really an issue. Pretty much all schools anymore have laptops, ipads, or some other device provided to the students to use in the classroom anyway.

While true, I think there are plenty of learning opportunties, regardless of class, that don't involve the need to search the web. In fact, I could argue it would improve learning and communication between students.

It would be great if it were that easy, but it's not. Kids will sneak it during class.

A lot of districts have labs or laptop carts that can be reserved by a teacher but that doesn't necessarily mean they are available when the teacher wants to use them.

And a number of school are part of the 1:1 initiative but not "pretty much all." In fact, there was a tweet sometime last year by Jason Glass that said just over 1/3 of districts are part in some fashion. Of those, I doubt few offer them on a 7-12 basis.

True, but kids will sneak it if banned too.

That's what I mean, if you have a legitimate reason to make a phone call you can use a teacher's phone or go to the office to do it.

Many of the school districts are going to issued laptops or ipads though as well. The student gets it when they're in 9th grade and keep it until their a Senior where they have the option to buy it or return it.
