Re: Hoops Insider: Kane shines in "secret scrimmage"

I think this year's team will be like all the others. We will lose a few games we probably should early on as roles become defined and the team begins to click offensively. I'll tell you what, I'd sure prefer to continue to have the team come together late than be one of those teams that plays a patsy non-conference schedule, goes 12-0 in the non-conference season then tanks in the conference season.

Disappointed SDW is struggling to play this season. I expected more from him. Something tells me Edozie gets the playing time that many though Percy would.

On the other hand, Lucious and the previous 1 yr seniors had a year sitting to practice in Fred's system. Kane doesn't have that.

SDW is a redshirt freshman. I think he's much in the same position Naz was in last year, where I feel he could step in and contribute if needed, but he's the odd man out of the rotation.

That's going to be rough with as raw as Edozie sounds. This starting frontcourt is going to be good, but the lack of somebody to even soak up Booker's minutes of the bench, much less address the problems we had beyond that when Melvin or Georges got into foul trouble is going to be a pretty obvious Achilles' heel this year.

No crowd though. I know you still have to figure in travel and unfamiliarity, but it's not like it was a hostile environment.

That's why I get the feeling Hogue becomes either someone off the bench or goes to the bench early for a 3rd guard then comes back in for Ejim/Niang. Unless Gibson breaks out this year or those two are better at not getting fouls.

I think this year will be different for a few reasons:

    1. Kane is not Lucious. Hoiberg handled Lucious brilliantly in bringing him along and letting him play into his vital role for the team, but it took a while. I think Kane won't take as long to find his stride and fit on the team.

    2. Hoiberg is thinking NCAA tournament seeding, not just making the tournament. A relatively weak Big 12 should allow us to generate a better record if we don't give away non-conference games.

Agreed, but I hope we can get to the point where we beat Iowa 65% of the time, UNI 70% of the time and Drake 80% of the time.

Obviously for guys like Thomas and Morris, this year will have some ups and downs, but Sunday's scrimmage was a great opportunity to get some quality experience against good players.

If Niang and Ejim were fairly low key, that tells you that we have some upside.

Reading between the lines, after Morris and Naz, there isn't anyone that is stepping up and looking good consistently. Hopefully between Edozie and Percy, we can get some quality play in the post when needed, AND it will definitely be needed.

Between SDW and Bluford, hopefully we can find some instant offense when needed throughout the year. That will likely be their role so hopefully one of them is "on" more times than not.
We probably even had a copy of the 600 page Mcd/CU playbook.

It really sounds like our 5 best players are Niang, EJim, Kane, Thomas and Hogue, so I think they'll have trouble keeping him off the floor like that. It doesn't sound like he's got that McGee instant-offense game where he's more valuable coming off the bench. We're going to want him out there rebounding and defending.

Re: Hoops Insider: Kane shines in "secret scrimmage"

My only concern is that Kane doesn't mesh with this team until late in the season, or not at all. If he starts thinking he has to do it all in order for ISU to win, we could be facing a Pierre Jackson and Baylor type situation this year.

Guessing Niang and Ejim didn't play as much as they normally would since its a way for coaches to figure out different lineups and combinations and a way to evaluate new guys.

Funny that It says Thomas wasn't flashy but another source has him scoring 19.

But it sounds like he's really liking the fact that he doesn't have to do everything for our team, and has really bought into leading and doing whatever it takes to win. I think having guys like Niang and Ejim to go along with Fred's great psychological management, we should be fine. We'll certainly see less of that, IMO than with Chris Allen and KL.
