Out of State License Help/Turning 21 Question

So I am turning 21 soon, but I am an out of state resident. My license expires on my 21st birthday and this poses a question: Will my card not be allowed to buy alcohol since it would be expired?

Has anyone dealt with this before? Do states offer Out of State license renewal?

Should I just get an Iowa License on my 21st?

    My teams: (as of 9/20/13)
    Cleveland Browns: 0-2 - .000
    Cleveland Indians: 83-70 - .542
    Cleveland Cavs: 24-58 - .293
    Iowa State Cyclones (FB): 0-2 - .000

    9/22/18 & 9/7/19
    Akron and Iowa State

In Iowa, the rule is you have 30 days before and 30 days after the expiration date to renew....

Are you sure it's not 90 after?

You can get an Iowa license if you live here for school. Just go to the DOT.

60 days after, not 30. I just renewed mine 40 days after.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Well I know in Ohio, you can "renew" your license up to 6 months but it is technically a new license which is a different fee than if you renew it up to 30 days after it expires. If you wait till after 6 months you have to retake the driving test

Pretty sure in Iowa the fee is the same for 60 days. I know it was $20 for a 5 year license.

This. If you own a car you should run it by your insurance company.

I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

FYI, if you got an Iowa license, and eventually moved back to Ohio...they will also make you retake the written portion of the test to transfer over an out-of-state license back to an Ohio license. It's not big deal, but if you can get back to Ohio to renew...probably the better idea.

You will probably have trouble buying alcohol with an expired license; even though it is still valid 30 up to 60 days beyond expiration as others have pointed out, most clerks won't understand this (identity theft precaution) and they'll only see that it is expired and therefore not a "valid" ID.

Re: Out of State License Help/Turning 21 Question

Upon quick internet search, it appears there are ways to renew an Ohio license online, for military and persons living temporarily out of state. You could probably investigate that further to see if you qualify.

I am not sure what might happen with your insurance if you change state of licensing. I assume you need to get rated from Iowa if you change, which might be cheaper. Also your plates?

Have a son in grad school out of state, he was dismayed how much the insurance was compared to Iowa. Might be worth switching it all unless you want to wind up back in Ohio and then it is just a hassle.

It would surprise me if they bothered to look at the expiration date -- or is that required?

Wouldn't it fail at the places that scan though?
