Re: Do you get flu shots?

I guess I don't understand flu shots. Isn't there a decent chance you can suffer the symptoms of the flu, albeit not in the severity that the normal flu would give you, from getting the shot? I haven't had the flu in years, and as such I don't see the advantage of taking the risk of having a lesser form of the flu in an attempt to prevent it.

How common is the flu? I've never had it and hardly know anyone that has.

    CDC - Seasonal Influenza (Flu) - Q & A: Seasonal Flu Shot

Side effects can include a low-grade fever and aches (not the actual flu). An actual case of influenza can involve hospitalization, if severe enough - and can infect everyone around you, including children, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity. IMO, it's as much for others as it is for me.

Ahh, so apparently the "flu shot can cause the flu" argument is one I've concocted in my own mind to justify not getting a flu shot for all of these years.

No, I think a lot of people think it! Sort of a common myth. Just your body fighting the vaccine, which is actually building your immunities. Same reason a lot of little kids get low-grade fevers for a few days after their immunizations, if I had to guess.

Re: Do you get flu shots?

The one year for whatever reason, I didn't get the flu shot, I got the flu and a few weeks later that flue was pneumonia. I haven't missed not getting a flu shot since.

My work provides the shot for free and had mine last week.

Wrong. A co-worker just got one last week. She was out of the office for 2 days with aches and fever up to 101. Didn't have any of the nastier things that may come with the flu, but she definitely had some symptoms as a reaction from the shot.

I look at this way. If you've never got one, don't do it. The chances you will have symptons are pretty high. If you get one regularly, you shouldn't have any issues, as long as you are healthy when you get it.

She had symptoms, but I guarantee she did not have the flu (if she had a shot, and not the attenuated nasal vaccine). The vaccine either doesn't have the virus, or else it has been killed. No way to get the flu from the flu shot.
