Friday OT - Early Beatles or Late Beatles?

Which is better - early Beatles or late Beatles?

(Clearly the answer is "The Stones," but let's operate with the two above, and supporting cases as to why.)

Late no doubt, Revolver, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's. I like the early stuff too but I feel like the later stuff has more substance, maybe because they found drugs in the late 60's.

I opened this thread to post "The Stones".

    Damn you, Angela. Damn you.

To answer the post's question, late, for most of the reasons 3True mentioned. They were at their most interesting and well-rounded on the White Album and Abbey Road, IMO.

Late, and for me it's not really that close. I think most people use Sgt. Pepper's as the beginning of "late" Beatles, but for me it's Rubber Soul. I love everything from there on.

Yea, define "early" and "late" . If anything I think my taste probably runs towards the middle transition phase of their discography.

That's why I'd add the category of "middle" Beatles. Rubber Soul and Revolver have always been my favorites.

Re: Friday OT - Early Beatles or Late Beatles?

For me it's definitely their later stuff. Although Rubber Soul is one of my favorites, just a solid album start to finish. I think that one was where they started moving in the direction of their later stuff and I think its the first one where they actually wrote every song themselves? But yeah, their later stuff is definitely the most interesting for me.

    Agreed, later Beatles. Not close.

And just to poke the bear, Late Beatles > Stones. That's right, I went there.

It really is the correct answer.

I think Abbey Road and Revolver are my two favorite Beatles' albums. I'd say cut-over was around Rubber Soul, maybe? I think it seems like the weed consumption maybe skyrocketed around that time.

I like the middle and later stuff. Abbey Road is by far my favorite. After that, probably the white album.

Re: Friday OT - Early Beatles or Late Beatles?

I will say that although the later stuff is probably better music, the early stuff really does scratch a "fun" music itch if you're in the right mood. Maybe it's just because growing up my parents listened to a MN oldies stationed that played A LOT of early Beatles, but I do love both for different reasons.

From Rubber Soul on the Beatles blow everyone out of the water, even the "Stones".

Rubber Soul is when they really changed from sounding like all the imitation bands to something really different.

Though one of my favorite Beatles songs is from the album HELP!, "The Night Before"

White Album would be my favorite if it didn't have so much crap. They only released it as a double album to get out of their contract.

I thought we should probably have made a very, very good single album rather than a double. But they insisted. I think it could have been made fantastically good if it had been compressed a bit and condensed. A lot of people I know think it's still the best album they made. I later learnt that by recording all those songs they were getting rid of their contract with EMI more quickly.

Not to say there isn't some good stuff on the early albums, there definitely is, it's just more catchy pop stuff for the most part I think.
