If it's not broke, fix it

So, the NFL is still hard up to expand the playoffs. Maybe they should just do away with it and invite everyone to bowl games...

Expanded playoffs possible for 2015, Roger Goodell says - ESPN

    This struck me...
"How do we continue to make sure the regular-season games are incredibly important each week, but also, how can we create more interest, and does expanding the postseason allow other teams to get into the dance with the potential of going on and winning the Super Bowl?"
You need more? I mean, the interest in the NFL is insane and far exceeds any other sport/league.

Get into the dance? This isn't March madness, but it may become that if they keep expanding the season and playoffs.

Shorten the season and let all 32 teams in the playoffs. Because even the Jacksonville Jaguars deserve a chance to win the Super Bowl this season.

Seems dumb, I think the number they have now is perfect, Division winners and 2 wild cards, if you're not one of those teams I'd seriously question how much you deserve a playoff spot.

I'm surprised he didn't say he would like to move a playoff game to London. There already talking about having 3 games there in the future.

I love that two teams get rewarded with a bye. 6 teams is perfect.

NFL is as perfect as a set up as you can get right now (minus preseason being too long). Dont screw with it.

Yep, this makes as much sense as the 18 game season with the concussion issue on the forefront.

In short, I'm a believer in the Diminishing Returns factor (expanding from 64 to 68 (and likely more) in NCAA tournament as an example).

That's from a competitive standpoint. Obviously, if there are $ involved, that typically drives the train. But it doesn't necessarily improve the product.

I think the NFL should drop its bye weeks and have only one week, not two, between conference championship round & Super Bowl. But that's a separate topic.

Nothing can ever seem to be left alone. Same way with the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

100% agree. And I firmly believe that MLB and NBA (and NHL for that matter) would be a lot better off with fewer games.

NFL has it damn near perfect as far as format - no need to screw with it.

Re: If it's not broke, fix it

If NFL truly wants to toy with its playoff system, keep the qualifiers as-is, then seed each round exclusively on record.

Some people hate the idea that a team can get in by winning a horrible division and a team with better mark may get left out. Hey, that's the format, there's no way to tweak it either way (because seasons vary). But then, do the matchups thereafter by record (so a wild card team could have home-field vs. a division winner w/ worse record).

Re: If it's not broke, fix it

I think it's silly to for the NFL to expand the playoffs, but from a corporate perspective, show me a business that is not constantly looking to enhance and tweak their product, and I'll show you a business that's on the decline. The goal is to squeeze every last drop of profitability out of your product. I highly doubt this idea is being considered flippantly. The NFL didn't get where it is by being dumb and making brash decisions. I'm sure they've got the market research to back up their plan. That doesn't mean it's a guaranteed success, but you can be sure they've done their homework.

Instead of extra playoff qualifiers, get rid of "exhibition" games and play a 20 week split-season with more bye weeks and a chance to make the tournament in each half.

Exhibition games are a bigger joke than ever and need to go.

I hate the expansion of playoffs in almost every sport. I understand it from a money standpoint (which is what they care about), but if you are going to keep expanding the playoffs (especially in MLB and the NBA as 22 stated), you are destroying the use of such long regular seasons.

NFL is still king of pro sports, I'm not sure they should change anything. They must be trying to get the jump on the growing popularity of soccer.
