    CenturyLink?

Have officially had it with Mediacom. Would like to switch, but it sounds like CenturyLink is the only realistic option for internet, and I've heard mixed reviews on them. Anyone have experience/thoughts/advice on CenturyLink vs. Mediacom?

Also, Dish or DirecTV and why?

    Any insights greatly appreciated.

I've never had them but I think it'd mostly depend on the speed they were able to offer in your location.

Always works, never fast... I am on 7mbps. Cannot get anything more than that.

I have Directv and centurylink. They have a discount if you bundle them together.

    Re: CenturyLink?

We switched to CenturyLink and have been pretty happy. I know some people say the connection an speed isn't as good but we stream a lot of Netflix to our TV, Skype with family living abroad, and other things like that with no problems. The staring rate is obviously a lot lower and their customer service is a lot easier to deal with and willing to negotiate lower on-going rates if you're willing to play the game.

CenturyLink also has some good bundle deals with DirecTV if it sways that decision.

I gave up on MC and went to DirecTV/Century Link. Happy with DirecTV. Great sports selection, and my DVR doesn't mysteriously de-activate every 6 months or show, causing me to lose all my shows and get a new cable box.

Century Link is fine, if you can get the 5mbps connection. There is one that is lower than that, which is what my in-laws have and that is slow enough to be a problem. But the 5mbps is just fine. Streams Netflix in HD without issue.

Also have not had any internet downtime with CL, as opposed to MC which would lose internet every time we got rain due to poor condition of the underground cable network.

So, if you can get the 5mbps connection with CL, I think the tradeoff is worth it.

    Re: CenturyLink?

I think 5mbps might count as high speed internet in Sudan still.

I believe you plagiarized that line right off of Page 1 of: "How To Get People To Pay For Way More Than They'll Ever Use: A Mediacom Business Model."

Did you ever have Mediacom? If so, is it noticeably slower with CL?

When I was on Mediacom they were 8mbps, but I think it's faster now.

What are you pulling for speed right now? I'm consistently about 4.5. Netflix, Cyclones.tv and NFL Sunday Ticket all stream without buffering at HQ.

I guess it depends on what else you need to use if for. If streaming is really all you need it should be fine. I guess if you're still downloading huge files on Napster or Kazaa you might need the extra speed.

I agree they charge too much for it, but I use all of my 30mbps regularly, 5mbps might as well be dial up.

What in the world are you doing?

I suppose if you're working from home/business with a lot of VPN and file transfer and simultaneous stuff going on, yeah, CL isn't going to be for you.

But if you're just Joe Homeowner who wants to read CF and stream movies or watch youtube, it isn't a huge deal.

    Re: CenturyLink?

Had Mediacom since college years from 2008-2011. Had them up until a couple of months ago where switches to Century link/direct tv.
The internet doesn't seem to go down like Mediacom would every couple of months. We tried to upgrade our century link speed but were unable to.

Sometimes it doesn't load my pron very quickly.
