It is really in the purview of Dan Snyder. The Oneidas of Wisconsin should try to buy the team.

The straight rich white guy is the only one who gets to decide if the name is offensive?

Ultimately, the views of the native american community should carry a lot more weight since its a term referring to them.
However, it has not been changed to date. This is Dan Snyder and the NFL saying no. Until you convince them, you have no progress. All you do is make more publicity for the R******S.

Hey, the country is as divided as it has been for decades.

He owns the team. You need to buy Snyder out. Just like Donald R. Sterling. The rich dude owns the team.

    Re: Redskins

I was watching videos on CNN.com last night - even if they lose the trademark to the Redskins name, nothing changes. First, it's still defendable by common law (just harder). Second, money speaks - the only way they will even consider changing the name is if they are hit financially - boycotting games, refusing to purchase team items, refusing to watch on TV, etc. Those against the name can boycott all they want, but odds are those most likely to boycott probably weren't going to games or buying team stuff anyway. Which means unless there's a change of heart amongst the core supporters, nothing changes.

He does, indeed, own the team. But, the United States does not need to protect the rights of said team to profit exclusively off of their merchandise. And if the Redskins don't own their trademark, than they can't grant that trademark to the use of the NFL, which means that the NFL doesn't get to sell the rights to make those trademarked items to companies like Nike. And if Nike doesn't have to buy those rights, than we don't have to pay $120 for an RGIII jersey.

So, I think the name might be changing.

And I don't get why it hasn't changed yet.

The behavior is being called to task and nothing of consequence has happened. Even the trademark decision is being appealed. Has the name been changed yet after several years of infighting? Dan Snyder claims he will not change. Stop buying his tickets and quit watching the NFL.

I think if the NFL has trouble controlling their copyright, they may apply pressure to change the name. And I am perfectly aware that they ultimately have the final say. However, let's call it what it is. It's the NFL and an owner refusing to change a racist team name. They and their supporters don't have the moral high ground in this and shouldn't pretend that they do.

The Redskins logo has not had it's copyrights stripped - just the Redskins name.

They have not claimed the moral high ground. They refused to change since Snyder did not want to. They totally blew off the dem 50 senator letter.

Same old story. Use the boycott of the product to urge change. Obviously Snyder does not want to change. I know there is club cost to make a name change, but, bottom line, he does not want to change.

I would guess the legal fees to fight this so stringently, along with the negative publicity, would make a name change much more financially viable.

I'd honestly be very interested in hearing the financials on fighting the name change in court vs. enacting the name change.

Yeah, I changed that after I noticed it. I meant to say name.
