    Northwestern Was Screwed

Maybe many of you didn't see the game. I was expecting an uproar. QB wasn't down, and he got a terrible spot. I guess it was his fault for bobbling the snap. Ha. Ha.

Big money schools get protected. Texas, OSU, and Stanford all got some helpful calls to end their games this week.

Agreed...absolutely terrible spot against NW to virtually seal the game for tOSU.

    Re: Northwestern Was Screwed

Did you see the difference between spots from both line judges? One had him with a 1st down. The other, a half a yard short. The one with the 1st down suddenly realized that he would cost OSU the game, and stepped back to the other spot.

I posted a comment on Facebook about the fact that the Big 12 can take their public reprimand and stick it up Bevo's hind quarter. My aunt, who's a bugeater fan, said something to the effect of "that's why "we" left the Texas-controlled Big 12" then complained about how bad the officiating was in their last year in the conference (duh!). I replied "I don't think trading a Texas-controlled conference for a Michigan/OSU controlled conference was such a great trade. Pick your poison, I guess". This Northwestern screw job was timely proof of my point.

No brand to protect, so they don't get the call.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

Since several posters have suggested that ISU needs to leave for another conference to get fair officiating, I guess this narrows it to the SEC if we still want similar TV money...

    Re: Northwestern Was Screwed

You know, ESPN had the perfect opportunity to do a Tom Rinaldi special report during Gameday yesterday on how the big programs influence officiating after seeing what happened to us.....but of course, they punted on that. Hell, they didn't even mention our game through their entire 3 hour show.

I guess I shouldn't expect an entity (ESPN) that is ALSO controlled by the big money programs to do a report that might put those big money programs in a negative light. See ESPN's recent pulling out from their sponsorship of a report on concussions in the NFL as another example of the same. No journalistic integrity to be found.

    Re: Northwestern Was Screwed

I'll feel sorry for Northwestern when they don't let opposing teams' fans invade their stadium. If they don't care why should I? What an embarrassment.

The refs called it like that so the crowd wouldn't kill them.

    Re: Northwestern Was Screwed

Anyone else think that the punt that was downed on the 6" line for NW should have been a touchback? I'm pretty sure the player jumped from the end zone to catch the ball and land 6" out, or does it not matter that he came from the end zone?

I guess it shouldn't matter, I mean NW had the opportunity for a 99.5 yard drive after that and didn't take advantage. Instead OSU blocked their punt for a td.

Doesn't matter that he came out of the endzone. His heel being on the endzone line should have been looked at IMO.

    Re: Northwestern Was Screwed

I agree. Teams like Texas and Ohio State are going to be "protected" when possible.

Take Ohio State for example. They are probably the Big 10's only shot at a team making the National Championship game. You can't tell me that it's in the Big 10's interest to "protect" them. And the officials are Big 10 officials obviously, so it's also in their best interests too.

I'm losing more and more interest in college athletics daily. It's nothing but a scam. A team like ISU is going to get the shaft almost every night out. Money talks.

I think in college football the only thing that matters is whether the ball breaks the plane of the goal line, and that it doesn't matter if the player is in the end zone when he touches the ball as long as the ball is outside of the end zone. In the NFL, it's the opposite....the ball can cross the goal line but the player can't be touching down in the end zone when he touches the ball or it's a touchback.

Same thing happened in the Nebraska/Illinois game- Illinois guy had both feet in the endzone and downed the ball at the 1" line (pretty spectacular play). Im pretty sure that it doesnt matter where you are standing when you touch the ball in the college game. If the ball crosses the plane of the end zone at any point it is a touchback- whereas in the pro game as long as the player can leap and not touch any part of the endzone then you can go into the endzone to "get" the ball.

    Re: Northwestern Was Screwed

While I agree that a lot of the times, the "name" schools get the calls, on that 4th down call there was no way to overturn that call. The only replay view that showed the ballcarrier and his progress was from downfield, and at an angle, so it would be impossible to accurately assess the true position of the ball in relation to the line of scrimmage. They did have a line of scrimmage angle, but on that one, you could not see the QB or the ball at all, so it was not helpful in making any determination.

As far as the line officials, the one on the side with a view of the QB and the ball approached the spot in a straight line from the onset. The official on the other side did appear to waver a bit, but I believe it was simply to avoid a player on the ground at the time. The spot he started at is the same as the spot he ended at.

I only have enough energy to care about the times Iowa State got screwed. But I wish I was seeing posts with the title "Northwestern Deserved to Lose" like I saw Thursday night on here.

Everyone is willing to give other teams the benefit of the doubt, but not our team.
