Re: Why did we kick a field goal instead of going for it?

As Herm Edwards once said "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!!" A field goal there loses you the game 31-30. When you are Iowa State and you are playing Texas, you have to be aggressive and TAKE the win. With Texas's season and their coach's career on the line, there was no way they weren't going to man up and go down and score there. Just the reality of it. A touchdown wins you the game. Plain and simple.

100% without a doubt the correct call.

That's the whole point though. If you don't get the first you are up by 3 and Texas has to drive the whole length of the field and even if they do there is a good chance you get OT. By going up by six you give them the shot at a big return at you also force them to try to get a touchdown and play for that rather than a field goal.

And keep in mind if you get the first down or touchdown you're likely up by ten.

100% without a doubt the wrong call. That game was over the minute we took the delay of game and eliminated the chance of going for it.

Either way they have to drive down the field. And I would rather risk locking the game up or make them drive from the 1 yard line rather than risk a field goal and have them drive from their 25.

Well, it's a dumb thread anyway. If Rhoads had gone for it and hadn't converted, this thread would be titled "Why did we go for it instead of kicking the field goal?"

The stupid part was throwing on third down. If we run it at least the clock keeps going

What you just posted right there is the definition of playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

This is the key point, and is the reason why it's a good idea to go for it. Another good reason is if the opponent is down three it's possible the opponents coaching staff will be conservative if they do get into scoring position to preserve a chance at a fieldgoal.

Bill Barnwell from Grantland does statistical analysis on these types of situations for NFL games and he suggests teams go for it in that situation.

This. They get 4 downs to go down there and score a touchdown down 6. Or they get complacent and just kick for overtime with the 3 downs.
