There was a lot of speculation on Chicago sports talk radio that Gardenhire was a Cubs target. Guess you can put that to bed now.

He's done more with less than anyone I can think of. A few of the years he's made the playoffs, the Twins were picked dead last. It makes me sick to my stomach the amount of good players the Twins keep giving away.

I'm a Twins fan and am fairly ambivalent about Gardenhire's return. It's about the pitching, pure and simple. What years, however were the Twins picked last when they made the playoffs? You do remember the Royals have been in the same division all these years. Not that they didn't eat our lunch this year....

    Nailed it.

Gardy has won the division with a staff full of #3 starters but when you have a bunch of #5s and guys that wouldn't start for anyone else you have no chance. Can't polish a turd.....

Twins need to get back to playing solid D, moving base runners along, etc. That was their identity. Last couple years they strike out way to much and give away extra outs with sloppy fielding. And Mauer actually PLAYING would help.

I can't find it now but I read an interesting piece that made a case that Pierzynski was more valuable than Mauer. A good portion of the reasoning was because of durability. Joe does very little good on the bench or trainer's room.

I'm not sure I would argue over it, but it was thought provoking.

Haven't read it, but that's ridiculous.

The "Mauer" isn't valuable or "Mauer" isn't worth it crowd are the same folks that are slaves to the RBIs = Value crowd.

If you put actual major league players in front of Mauer, he'd be "producing" tons of runs. It's on the Twins for filling the two or three spots in front of him with a combined .210 OBP. Can't knock in ghost runners.

Mauer was close to the only legit MLB player in that lineup for most of the year.

Great. Maybe another 96+ loss year for the Twins in 2014?

    Other Winning Teams:
    Oakland $68,577,000
    Pittsburgh $66,289,524
    Tampa Bay $57,030,272

That's what solo shots are for.

You Yankee fans would know about that. Didn't they have some obscene multi-month streak to start the year without a home run with men on base? Only solo shots?

Or maybe it was without a 3-run homer....I can't remember now.

This year there was a power outage unless your name was "Cano" or "Soriano". Soriano played all of 58 games in pinstripes and was 2nd on the team in jacks.

It had more to do with how Joe has been injured and not playing so much during his entire career. You aren't contributing on offense or defense when you are riding the pine with an injury.

Joe Mauer played only 35 games in '04 and AJ only played 33 games in 2000. Excluding that first year for each of them, Pierzynski has averaged 132 games per season for 13 years and Mauer averaged 127 games per year since 2005. Personally, I will take Mauer's career OPS of 873 over AJ's 750. AJ did finish 30th in the MVP voting one year, though.

Any analysis that tries to downgrade Mauer's value needs to ride the pine.

According to Fangraphs, Mauer's 2013 production was worth over $26 million in free agent dollars. $3 million more than he was paid.

For the most part, the anti-Mauer arguments generally fall in the "Can't see the forest through the trees" category.
