    NCAA reducing Penn State's penalties

NCAA to reduce penalties against Penn State regarding Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse matter - ESPN

The NCAA has decided to reduce the historic penalties against Penn State, returning some of the 20 annual football scholarships that were forfeited under the sanctions handed down in July 2012 because of the university leadership's lack of action regarding the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse matter.

"Beginning next academic year [2014-15], five additional initial scholarships will be restored to the university's football team," Penn State said in a release on Tuesday. "This amount will continue to increase until they reach the full allocation of 25 initial in 2015-16 and 85 total football scholarships in 2016-17."

Penalties should have been harsher, not reduced.

Well it's only fair, I mean their program has been good and hasn't assaulted any young boys that we know if this year, they deserve a little pat on the back for that.

Re: NCAA reducing Penn State's penalties

Didnt read it but did they give a reason why they "decided" to reduce the penalties?

Thats like a parent saying "your grounded for a month" only to let their kid go out the very next weekend.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Re: NCAA reducing Penn State's penalties

    The NCAA has no balls.

The whole 'you cant punish kids who werent even here when it happened' thing that people are bringing out is a ridiculous argument. How do you punish a program ever then? Let kids transfer out if they want (like the NCAA did with PSU) and if you sign on knowing the penalties are there don't whine about it.

The joke was that they imposed penalties on the football program at all! Unrelated situations...penalizing current players when they had NOTHING to do with the situation that caused the sanctions...the NCAA only hammered PSU for PR reasons...nothing more.

The NCAA's primary mission is more than just sports. It is a group of universities with aligned interests in education and the educational opportunities sports can provide for member institutions. If a program allows sports to interfere with its primary mission, being a positive force for young people, as Penn State did by covering up Sandusky's acts, it deserves a message sent by the NCAA that that is not ok.

In truth they shouldve been given the death penalty. Take a break from football for awhile and assess what's really important.

And the school rid itself of all people charged with criminal actions...and some that weren't charged. If this is the case...they should have kicked PSU out of the NCAA. Why stop at football? The school's AD & pres were involved...not just football coaches. Ban all sports from participating in the NCAA.
