Should ISU establish the passing game first.

Most football teams try to establish the run game first. Once an offense is effective with its running game, the other team will have to add more defenders to the box to stop the run, which will open up opportunities for the passing game. I think ISU needs to do the opposite. They need to establish their spread passing game first. Spread the field and take what the defense gives you. If the spread passing game is effective, defenses will be forced to move defenders out of the box, that should open up our running game. It seemed to me that ISU was trying to establish its run game the first two games this year and we have seen those results.

Yes, assuming Richardson is the starting QB. No if anyone else starts at QB.

I think the offense should pass when the defense thinks they will run and run when the defense thinks they will pass.

Conventional, but we would screw it up.

We should establish a beachhead first.

They should establish a new OC first.

Establish a passing game? Hell, I'll be happy with a few first downs.

Yes. We very solid WR's for the first time in awhile and our QB's can typically get the ball to where it's supposed to be.

    YES!!!

Now I am done with the yelling. I think we should pass to establish the run.

Until the running game starts to click, then yes. By all means, yes. You can't completely abandon it but you've gotten close to nothing out of it so far.

I think someone should establish our offense by cutting the cord on Messingham's headset.

Re: Should ISU establish the passing game first.

If the defense puts 8 guys in the box we should pass most of the time. If they only have 6 guys in the box we should run most of the time. It's not a complicated concept.

Re: Should ISU establish the passing game first.

Hate to use an old HF quote but you need to scratch where it itches. Iowa was in press coverage with their marginal DBs all game against ISU and the Cyclones didn't make them defend the field till the game was over. UNI loaded up the box with their undersized defense and blitzed on almost every down. As average as the running game was against them, ISU should have picked a spot, gone two TE and just pounded the ball straight ahead. Also should have taken more than 2 shots down field before UNI knew the Clones were passing on every down.

Some how, some way the Cyclones need to find a way to score points and get first downs. Obviously Tulsa has some weaknesses in their defense. Someone need to figure that out and exploit it.
