La Gesse Explains some offensive woes

This is a good and telling article from Bobby La Gesse about the ISU offense. We all know how painfully obvious it is that has no identity on offense. Seems the coaches cannot agree on the problems or how to fix them. Just more proof that there are massive issues with the offense in Ames. Changes need to be made, maybe wholesale offensive changes. Anyone that has been involved with ISU offense under Rhoads should be gone. The offense has been the pretty much the worst in the Big 12 in this era. Kansas has been the worst...but not by much.

BLG paints a not so happy picture. if I'm CPR and he isn't calling what i want, id relieve him if his duties, we haves other capable coaches.

He makes a great point. Glad it's in print that Mess was calling out players and not play calling as an issue. Be a man, perhaps even 40, and own up to what's happening on the field. He's just as culpable as the players. I got no problem with the scheme. Dozens and dozens are playing spread offenses and versions of it. But the guys trying to run the scheme aren't working out.

A Coordinator should never not be on the same page as a head coach. It's not a recipe for his future.

The article just puts together the stuff that people here have already tied together, but it's very well done.

As a rule, get on the page of the one you work for. It's not a difficult concept. If CPR is the head coach, the OC gets himself onto that page. That's the only thing that needs to happen in that setting.

It's obvious Mess has no clue what he is doing. ANYONE, I mean anyone that watched any Iowa games knew their secondary was their weakness. Iowa starts the game with 8 in the box and what does he do???? He has to go. Took him waaaaaay to long to start doing what he should have been doing all game. He is the type of coach that after a game is over can go back and say I wish I would have done this different instead of during a game being able to see and change things right then and there.

To me what sucks is that I don't think CPR is qualified to be critiquing an offense, just like Mess isn't qualified to run one.

CPR's critique is based on the defensive perspective, which I think he is qualified to do. Mess is just a mess.

maybe we should start looking back to the sideline before everyplay, then just do the opposite of what Mess called?

Re: La Gesse Explains some offensive woes

I'm not one to pile on - and I've certainly supported Mess up until now - but I think I've been swayed into thinking that he should be demoted (or fired). The comments highlight what many of us have already noticed on our own. The offense lacks identity, fails to execute consistently, and lacks a coherent strategy.

I guess the thing that has been most disappointing to me is that it does not seem like the offense makes any second half adjustments. Maybe you can argue that the outburst at the end of the Iowa game is the improvement/confidence building the offense needed, but I believe it was just lack of execution from Iowa.

We have a lot of talent coming into the offense next year and I just don't want to see it wasted.

Re: La Gesse Explains some offensive woes

So basically, Mess is saying that it's not his fault that he doesn't have a Joe Montana to execute his plays that are designed to be run by a Joe Montana kind of guy.

And Rhoads is saying that you design plays based on the players you do have.

I think I'll go with Rhoads on this one.

So why hasn't CPR gotten rid Messingham. Everyone knows he is bad at his job.

Re: La Gesse Explains some offensive woes

    Good article.

A thought- when Rhoads says we threw it deep too much, I think that's a bit of coachspeak there. Sam did throw it deep to Q in single coverage a few times - it was the right read but the throws were off target. I think Rhoads might be trying to make people think we are going to throw it deep less, but we actually will - misdirection comment. Could be reading into it too much tho.

2nd thought - Mess can't be destroying his players like that in print. This was discussed ad nauseum in another thread already. He sounds defensive and afraid for his job, and that is really not good. Unless he gets canned, which would be good.

3rd thought - why has no one at the Trib had BLG take a new headshot photo? He looks like a serial killer getting his drivers license photo taken through a hotel door peephole. Good grief.

What really perplexes me is that CPR thinks we did it way too much in the game. We saw what worked, we all knew the Iowa secondary was weak. I am kind of worried about the direction of the program now.
