    Locomotive Engineers

Is anyone a locomotive engineer or conductor? I am trying to find out if it's possible to job shadow either of these jobs somewhere in Iowa. Also if there are any pros or cons to these jobs that you can share I would appreciate it.

If there are any here, I've also got a question. If a locomotive were on a treadmill, would it be able to pull the cars?

I actually think this would be a very cool job for about a year, then the scenery would get old.

    Re: Locomotive Engineers

I'll add another question, why do you blow your horn louder and longer at 3 a.m. going through Glidden than at 3 p.m. when people are actually awake?

That rug really tied the room together, did it not dude?

Holy ****, I moved to Carroll in May and noticed this too. Sometimes they blow the horn from one side of town all the way to the other without stopping. It's annoying as hell.

Same thing in Sioux City. I never notice a train horn until about 8:00 at night. Some will blast their horn for almost 10 second burts over and over. I can't sleep with my bedroom window open because it wakes me up every time another ****ing train rolls through. I live over a mile from the tracks.

I live in Freddy Court at ISU for 2 years about 200 yards from the tracks there and never had a problem with train noise.

On the horn thing...I have friends that work for the railroad.....the more complaints they get from residents of a city, the louder and longer it gets. Proof: dowtown Des Moines.

I was sitting on Duff heading south today and predictably got stopped by the train. There was a guy that stuck his head of the main rail car and flexed and kissed his biceps as he passed through the intersection.

LOL...the funniest part is that I've been there dude...well, not at the Ames library, but in our town. Well, here's hoping there was at least some good looking moms there to take the sting off a little.

    Re: Locomotive Engineers

Major con: fatal accidents. It's inevitable that a locomotive engineer will be involved in a fatality. 25 % of pedestrian fatalities are suicides. One just happened in Kellogg last month.
