Re: Friday OT - The worst Hawk fan you ever knew/met

This isn't the worst, but it's the first one that comes to mind. I was in northern California a couple of years ago with a buddy. We'd gone to a place in Santa Rosa known for brewing its own beer. Buddy had excused himself to use the bathroom, so I'm sitting there alone (wearing my red ISU polo) and all of a sudden this random guy walks up to me and says "go Hawks!" (keep in mind that two days earlier in Denver while flying out west, a pilot passed us in the airport terminal and said "go Hawks" and nothing else - he was ignored). So after hearing this for the second time on a trip to California, I wasn't in the mood to play games. I just stared at him. He pointed at the logo on my shirt and said "you like Iowa State." I said, "I know." "I'm an Iowa fan." "I know." "Pretty fun game this year (2011)." "Yup, at least the right team won." Awkward silence from him for a bout three beats. "Well, I'm gonna go." "See ya."

Now that's hardly bad, but whatever happened to walking up to someone and saying "hello" first. I'm fine with having a good-natured conversation with Iowa fans if they don't act like a dick from word one. He probably wasn't trying to be that big of a dick, but it just rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't try to mask my irritation.

Re: Friday OT - The worst Hawk fan you ever knew/met

My worst encounters with Hoks are far from humorous. Back when I was a student, they had the always scary habit of "passing" girls in the student section. I had a friend who was tiny and she got passed regularly, so I thought I was safe sitting near her. But I got passed in the first CyHawk game in JTS, must have been 1981? I thought they would probably drop me on my head after a couple of rows, but as I was getting close to the top of the lower deck, I was passed to some guy who had a Hok acquaintance who came to visit in the student section. At the time I thought the Hok was a middle aged creeper (in retrospect, he was probably pushing 30) who smelled of vomit and peppermint schnapps, but the Hok started grabbing at me and yelling at the guy to drop me on his "lap." Fortunately the student sat me down on the bench on the other side of him and I scampered.

Also had actual Hok students yelling obscenities at my then 14 year old son when we were leaving a math contest at a building on their campus in Iowa City. He put on his jacket when it started to rain, which was a high school sports team in red and yellow that they seemed to think in their drunken stupor was an ISU jacket.

I know a really gross Tavern Hok who is a friend of my brothers. His granddaughter is named Kinnick. After the game last year, which he watched at my brother's house, no one knew where he went shortly after the game, but we found him passed out in the back yard peeing on himself. Ew.

Worst encounter I ever had was every encounter I had at the 2010 game in Kinnick.

One of my buddies is a big hawkeye fan and a drunk. He will be at the game tomorrow completely wasted, sitting in the cyclone donor section and screaming obscenities. He had Iowa state season tickets near the 50 yard line given to him.

Re: Friday OT - The worst Hawk fan you ever knew/met

A few years back, walking out of Jack Trice after a Cyclone win, there was a clearly drunk student standing (wobbling) at one of the corners along Beach, shouting "**** the Hawks" at the top of his lungs....as mothers with small children, people clad in both Hawk and Cyclone gear streamed past, most clearly looking distressed, poured past.

    After a win. Classy.

Oops--I'm sorry...that's the worst Cyclone fan I've ever met.

The worst Hawkeye fan I've ever met was the one gleefully spreading horrible, malicious and unfounded rumors about his own basketball coach. Of course--that was a lot of them.

my buddy and I were walking into the game in IC and a hawk fan launched an unopened beer at us, missed us and smoked some little kid in the face. The guy just took off running. The kid broke his nose from the looks of it.

Re: Friday OT - The worst Hawk fan you ever knew/met

Had a few of these last year in IC:

    *Walking down the street*
Hawk Fan: "**** State! yeah, **** the Cyclones!"
Me: "**** you. Do you even go to school here?"
Hawk Fan: "I uhh... I'm transferring in from Kirkwood next semester."

But, probably 80% of the actual students were very welcoming, surprisingly

    The worst:
The very late pregnant woman in a Drew Tate jersey smoking a cigarette outside the Kum-n-Go near Kinnick. It just bothered me seeing anyone do that, let alone a hawkeye fan

Are you sure that was a pregnant woman and not actually Drew Tate?

Now that I think about it, maybe that guy was the worst.

Worst so far was the bum in his UI sweatshirt I ran into at Kum-N-Go this morning. Dude was rummaging around for cans and obstructing the doorway. And he stunk like a barrel of rotting fruit under the hot tropical sun.

Re: Friday OT - The worst Hawk fan you ever knew/met

not sure if this is the worst, but certainly annoying.

used to work with a guy who claimed to be a huge hawkeye fan. Wore all the gear, always announced how the Hoks were gonna trounce whatever team it was they played that week, was brutal when the clones lost, you know a typical hawk fan. Mainly tried to ignore him because frankly he was pretty douchy on all topics, not just hawk related.

Anyway, it was the 2007 season, and we'd just beaten Iowa in the 15-13 game a couple weeks before. I had to go on a work trip, and the Hok fan was assigned to tag along, so I could show him the ropes. I was trying to be nice because we had to spend like 3 days together. We were eating dinner, and I decided to try to talk sports.
"Sucks about Andy Brodell, huh?" I said. This was 2 days after he suffered a season ending injury against Wisconsin.
    "Who?"
"Andy Brodell. One of the Hawk's receivers."
    "Does he start?"
"Well, yeah. I mean, he did."
"I don't know. All I know is Jake Christensen needs to go."

And to his credit, that was literally all he knew. Over the course of the next couple days, it became clear that I knew far more about his favorite team than he did.(and frankly I didn't think I knew all that much)
It just blew my mind how this self described "DieHard Hawk Fan" could be so clueless and yet so brazen about it.

Do you work at the same place I do?

I can only think of one Hawk fan that I work with who could actually have an informed discussion about football in general and the Hawk team in specific and that my boss. The guy from Iowa City who went to ISU and roots for the Hawks.

Every other Hawk fan in my office would be challenged to name the starting QB most years. They do know that Furrentz is the coach though.

I must have been damn lucky when I worked in eastern Iowa. The hardcore Hawks in that office actually knew their team pretty well (and had a decent passing knowledge of what ISU was up to). I work in an office that's basically all Cyclones now, but I actually miss the college football discussion from my old job.
