Re: 3 Thursday Thoughts: Messingham on RB usage; recruiting; Big 12 picks

I guess I understand what Mess is getting at but after everything we have seen regarding this offense, it comes off to me as just a little indecisive. Just make a call at rb and stick with it. He seems more concerned with not screwing up than he is about putting the best offensive product on the field.

Re: 3 Thursday Thoughts: Messingham on RB usage; recruiting; Big 12 picks

“Until somebody steps forward and takes the job, there should be ors,” offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham said. “The thing that they all have to do is they all have to understand that when they get their opportunity, they need to make plays.”
While I understand this viewpoint I really think they need to allow the backs to get into a rhythm. If they insist on sticking with all the "or"s then I'd prefer they just alternated every few series instead of every other play. At the least let White play through the whole first quarter before starting to sub everybody in.

We need an OC who has authority. Mess needs to pick an RB and go with him. Tell the other RBs when you prove to me that you deserve the carries you can have them. Make them compete on the practice field so they work that much harder.

It always seems to be something with ISU's offense. Either the QB isn't any good, or the offensive, or wide receivers, or the OC. Why is it so hard ISU yet seems to be so easy for other schools and I am not even talking about the big time programs.

The issue with the running back this year seems similar to the QB issues of the past. You have to stick with 1 (or in the RB position maybe 2) to allow them to get in a groove and work on their timings on hitting the holes.

Re: 3 Thursday Thoughts: Messingham on RB usage; recruiting; Big 12 picks

Mess's quotes on the RB's really didn't sit well with me. It basically sounded like they're going to put a ton of pressure on the RB's to make great plays, and then only give them a handful of opportunities to do so. And those handful of opportunities will be spread out across the entire game so not only do they have to make highlight reel plays they have to do so immediately after coming off the bench.

Sounds like a situation where they are being set up to fail.

Exactly - Even Adrian Peterson doesn't have each carry go over 7-8 yards, he pounds them & pounds them, then breaks a 60 yarder. Got to give them a chance to get into the flow AND they'll then have confidence that they'll be in the next series, even if they don't break a BIG ONE the series before

I wish Mess would quit blaming the players. If he wants the RBs to make some plays, then how about getting them some touches...

Does it really matter who you put out there at running back if Messingham consistently has Richardson lead the team in carries?

They finally put up the Cyclone Express replay the other day and on a rewatch I think that a lot of those runs were Richardson chosing to run rather than check down to his later options at reciever. Though with the camera angles you can't know for sure if he is missing open guys or if everyone is well covered. Based on Rhoads' comments from Monday I'm guessing he was missing his check downs.

Messingham is not a leader. Leaders make decisions and stick with them. You give these decisions time to work.

CW, you sure hung Lamar to dry.

You sure when he said "ORS" offensive red shirts he did not mean oars to move the boat?
