It would be interesting to see just how many open guys Sam missed in the opener. He seemed poised and careful with the ball, but UNI was bringing a lot of extra guys to the LOS, and it is hard to believe that there were not a few guys uncovered out there. From a TV screen view it appeared he did all he could, but you don't see things like blown coverage if the ball doesn't go to the wide open player.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It was hard to tell while watching the Cyclones.TV broadcast because the camera was so far zoomed in you couldn't see anything other than Sam running for his life.

According to the guy sitting behind me and his 6-year old Madden Jr. son it was about every other play.

The picture did seem tighter than other broadcasts. There were times (if my booze fueled brain is remembering correctly) that you couldn't even see who the wide outs were pre/post snap. It was basically the line and backfield.

Re: 3 Thoughts on Thursday: Lone bright spot from UNI loss, Big 12 picks

I agree that we don't have a QB controversy after Saturday night, but I'm still not sold that Sam had as good of a game as some people think he did.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a perfect game, I'd give Sam a 6. But I think some people would probably go higher than that.

Yes, he didn't commit any turnovers, which is always good, but he did lose to a FCS school still and I don't think he tried to make very many plays with his arm either. It seemed every guy he threw to was nearly wide open. And if they weren't wide open, he just ran with it. That isn't going to win us a lot of games.

At some point he's going to have to trust his throwing ability and his WR's ability to go get the ball too. You have to make some plays in the passing game downfield. He did hit Coleman, which was great to see, but it also makes you wonder how many more of those plays might have been available Saturday night but he either didn't see them open or he chose not to pull the trigger and just ran instead.

Re: 3 Thoughts on Thursday: Lone bright spot from UNI loss, Big 12 picks

Cyclone Television has a lot of bugs to work out, it was like watching a home movie at times. Anyways - I disagree with Chris on this analogy about Sam Richardson. I think a good quarterback runs to set up the throw, I know we run a zone read but he doesn't even survey the field when he gets the ball, he tucks his head down to run. I think that is a sign the game is still a little fast for him. When he first came out in the Kansas game last year, they rolled the pocket to allow him time to survey the field and he did well. I just don't think he is seeing the field that great right now. I think that is why UNI brought everyone but the kitchen sink.
