    I usually just rinse the extra blood and stuff out from the inside and then prepare as usual. I guess I dont have to, it probably just cooks out anyway.

    Despite the risk, 90 percent of the population washes their chicken before cooking it, according to a survey Quinlan conducted. The practice appears to have been passed down from generation to generation. During the study's focus groups, the most common reason for why consumers chose to douse their poultry was, "that's how I was taught to do it."

    I guess I am in the 10% that doesn't wash chicken.

    So what do brines do? I brine mine as well from time to time. I dont know, I would venture to say its rare for people to do it the old way and get sick unless they are really careless and lick their hands afterward or prepare other uncooked foods on the cutting board the poultry was on.

    a brine doesn't do much if anything for germs. Brining is all about adding flavor/moisture via osmosis.

    one time when I was about 8-10 I was camping by myself and caught a fish and cut it up with my hatchet and grilled it on the fire using a stick to hold it. Ate it scales and all. Thought thats how you did it. My mom came down the next morning and saw the bloody mess and was sure I was going to die. Took me to the hospital, nothing happend. I dont take food safety seriously.

    What Im saying is that what you brine it in (container) and where you empty it, is that a concern by their standards?
