Big weekend!: #14 San Diego Friday night, #18 llinois Sunday afternoon

Hope people are planning on checking out the volleyball team this weekend! Coming off a big win at UNI, they will want/need our support for two nationally ranked teams coming to Hilton. San Diego is Friday night at 6:30, while Illinois is Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

Looks like San Diego and Illinois play each other Saturday at noon. Admission is FREE, so if you want to see what should be a good match between top 20 teams, go check them out! I understand that there will be NO concessions on Saturday, however, so plan accordingly.

Re: Big weekend!: #14 San Diego Friday night, #18 llinois Sunday afternoon

The San Diego-Illinois match was entertaining on Saturday. There was a small group of ISU people there, a decent number of Illinois fans, and maybe ten for San Diego. USD took the match, 3-1. Illlinois had it's chances, especially in the 4th to push a 5th set, but fell apart once they got to 20 points.

What I took from it is that today, there will be two teams who grossly underperformed in their matches against San Diego, which goes home 2-0 from our tournament. If ISU is not ready to play, Illinois probably will be. We'll see who wants it more at 2:00 today.

I attended the match yesterday as well, and what I took from it is that San Diego was the class of the tourney - much quicker, precise than Ill or ISU, and great at disguising intentions and moves. CJL herself said SD is "under ranked" at #14. Their coach was upset they dropped a set to Illinois.

This is a big match today - Iowa State and Illinois meet many times on the recruiting trail. Illinois took Ali Stark (Mount Vernon) out of the state, and CJL recruits in the talent-rich Chicago suburbs.

Absolutely San Diego was the best team in the building over the past couple of days. You can easily see why they beat Hawaii at Hawaii and took Texas to 5 sets. They see the other side of the net exceptionally well and know exactly where to put the ball. Neither Illinois, nor Iowa State came even close to competing with that kind of precision. San Diego has be a top 10 team this week. The run they've had so far has earned them that.

Deb Stadick's younger sister plays for Illinois as well

I was trying to figure out if San D. were good or good and lucky when the first sets were done. It was no fliuke those kids are very astute at ball placement, blocking, avoiding the block and reacting.

I was going to give raves to San D's coach until I read, if accurate, she was upset to drop a set to IL! They may be a top 10 team and rising, but then my impression of them is not.

No, their head coach, Jennifer Petrie, just said that the team should have won the second set after leading and having set point at 24-22; they got sloppy. BTW, she was very complimentary of the tournament environment on Friday, and the fan support that Iowa State enjoys. They only draw 300-400 fans per match at San Diego. She said that the team enjoyed the trip and impressed with the hospitality of ISU. They host own tournament this weekend and play #3 USC; I would bet that ISU returns the favor and plays out there soon...

Wow.....did not expect ISU to only win one set this weekend! Lots of work to do.
