Re: NOTEBOOK: Mistakes mostly mental vs. UNI

I have to agree with this assessment. As I was leaving The Jack on Saturday after the loss I was thinking that the mistakes we were making were mostly mental and are expected of very young team. Now, I know that under no circumstances we should except a loss to UNI or any FCS team for that matter but it does happen. Seven times this past weekend to be exact.

This is encouraging to some degree because they can be fixed and I think the 2 weeks to prepare for Iowa is just what the doctor ordered. I expect Coach to put out a much more focused team against Iowa.

Mental mistakes or not, from where I was sitting it sure looked like we got physically dominated.

Re: NOTEBOOK: Mistakes mostly mental vs. UNI

Were there any comments about the mental mistakes on the sideline/pressbox?

Jim Bouton's old quote about the old baseball manager comes to mind, "I coached good but boy, did they play bad".

The tackling was terrible. I'll credit David Johnson, but not a typical Rhoads team performance

The tackling on Johnson's 4th Quarter TD was one of the worse displays of football ability I have seen in my life.

“They're very, very hard to guard,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said. “They're really good. And with Niang in the middle kind of wheeling and all those guys spreading you out, they're kind of a nightmare matchup. And they're men. They're really men.”

Did miller hit his hand up against a locker or something and break it?

Re: NOTEBOOK: Mistakes mostly mental vs. UNI

What was Miller's injury that he has a cast for? That would help explain the atrocious tackling but not really his problems with coverage. However, since I doubt we'll need to ask our linebackers to do a lot of coverage against Iowa that could help out. But I think by the time Big XII play rolls around and we face more spread teams the job will be Luke Knott's for good.

Yeah I find this to be an absurd example of coach speak.

Re: NOTEBOOK: Mistakes mostly mental vs. UNI

I am willing to admit there were mental mistakes, if the coaches are willing to admit they made several mental mistakes also. The team simply did not look ready to play. No emotion, no fire, confused on where to be on defense, what play to run on offense. Some of the choices they made for who was in the game where pretty questionable too. At least the defensive coaches made some adjustments at half to cover their problems, the offense, not so much.

Re: NOTEBOOK: Mistakes mostly mental vs. UNI

Looked like a typical young team in their first game to me. Come out playing tight and get stepped on early, settle in and play fine in the middle, then get tight again when you have a chance or 2 down the stretch to take the game back. It's inexcusable losing to UNI, but the ****** wasn't totally unexpected.

Re: NOTEBOOK: Mistakes mostly mental vs. UNI

The biggest mental mistake made by both the coaching staff and the players was that they wouldn't have to do anything more than show up to beat UNI.

I'm sorry guys, but I've watched poor O-lineplay for years and Saturday was more of the same. It's fundamental, it was against an FCS team, and it was dominating. Strap youselves in for a long season.

For some reason I let myself get sucked into the O-line hype every year, but nothing changes. Mental my ***.

I agree, while there were mental mistakes I don't see how getting blown off the ball is one of them
