Do you think UNI should make the jump to D1?

I am not totally basing this because of Saturday night' game. But UNI has had much success in football for many years, have a decent facility, have enrollment of around 13,000 or so. Do you think its time for UNI to jump to D1. I'm not saying that they will be the 11th member of the Big XII but they would hold their own in a MAC or a Mountain West. Thoughts?

Sure once they get the budget for it.

They should have to beat a decent football team in order to make the jump.

If college football goes to 4 super conferences, what would be the point? They won't have a seat at the grown-up table.

But, yeah, I've always thought they could be a decent MAC or MWC team.

I don't think they could afford it. They can barely afford being I-AA.

isn't 50% of their budget from the state currently?

If so, that just makes our loss that much more embarrassing.

Neither will we. Should we just go D2 now?

Re: Do you think UNI should make the jump to D1?

    No way.

The UNI-Dome would be the 2nd smallest FBS stadium by capacity, ahead of only Idaho by less than 350 seats. It would be embarrassingly small for an FBS stadium.

Also, UNI has success getting Iowa players who are FCS quality. That pipeline wouldn't be there anymore if they moved up and joined the MAC.

Can't they build a new SEZ in the upper decks?

Re: Do you think UNI should make the jump to D1?

After this weekend I am not sure it benefits any of the good 1AA teams to step up in class. First off you immediately lose local rivals. There isn't a lower level 1AA league that Iowa is geographically part of or close to furthermore. MAC is east, MWC west, CUSA and Sun Belt south.

I think football wise they'd have fit in well with the now dissappeared WAC but thats a lot of travel. There was an opportunity IMO when the WAC was collapsing a year ago I thought UNI could have joined EWU, NDSt, and the Montana teams and kept the WAC (I'm fond of that conference RIP) alive. I do think the NCAA should and would allow them to play in their little Dome even if its too small for NCAA standards that isn't a problem.

But the biggest home games of the year would be Lousiana Lafyette and North Texas. The bowl tie ins will be terrible. Not sure I can see it being worth it. If they had a guaranteed MAC bid I think that might be enough to think long and hard since those are good schools and getting to bring them all into their dome might be fun for their fans. But not worth it for CUSA or Sun Belt.

Re: Do you think UNI should make the jump to D1?

Well, UNI already IS in Division I, just at the FCS level. It amazes me how many people think they are Division II or don't realize their classification.

Anyway, I've thought for a long time now that UNI would be very competitive in the MAC. Even during the dark days of the Dunbar era in the late '90's they would win road games at MAC schools like Eastern Michigan and Ohio.

I know this has been discussed here before, but I think playing at FBS level rather then FCS level would actually benefit UNI financially.

If college football goes to 4 super conferences, Iowa State will also be left without a seat at the grown-up table.

Yes, ISU would be. Every team in the Big 12, ACC, Big Ten, SEC and Pac 12 would be included. No one from the leftover AAC would be included.

Trying to compete at D1 would bankrupt them. So yes because it means we wouldn't have to play them anymore. But no because something something instate loyalty something something.
