Why are we young in year 5?

I'm trying very hard to stay positive but the one question I don't see being asked is why exactly are we so young on defense? In year 5 we seem to be almost starting over. How exactly does that happen? Were the 2009, 2010 and 2011 classes that bad? Did we just miss across the board on recruiting defenders for 2-3 years?

This seems to be the most disappointing aspect of the program right now, and while it's in the past it's hard not to be concerned that we missed on so many classes in a row.

Re: Why are we young in year 5?

I don't think that's all that unusual. A lot of guys leave when there's a coaching change and the new coach often plays some of their first class of guys four years as starters. The year after they are gone, you lose a lot of experience, like we have this year after Knott and AK47 moved on.

JuCos and transfers are one way around it.

Re: Why are we young in year 5?

Same reason K-State has a young defense in year 5 of Bill Snyder's second go around. I think some of it has to do with the fact that up front, we haven't gotten the recruits at defensive line to play young guys. That means a lot of the starters are going to be juniors and seniors. As for linebacker guys transferring out hasn't helped.

UUmmmm you do realize that almost all of last years players were Chiziks right? What we're seeing now is the result of Chizik bolting. It's hard for new coaches to recruit, especially to a school that was in a shape that ISU was in.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Having years where you're young happens for all but the top power house programs. I think the more concerning thing is that our young team got beat by a FCS team that was much more physical and probably faster too.

Is this a serious question? Rosters are almost always cyclical.

I actually have no problem going through years where we are "young" but this defense almost seems like we are starting from scratch. Throwing in JUCO DT's, converting DE's to DT's and playing RS Freshman isn't what most teams do.

I think the thought that the years directly after Chizik bolting causing this mess is pretty spot on. I can agree with it. It was very hard to CPR to come in the first few years and recruit...so in that sense we are finally reaping what Chizik sowed.

This is like Obama blaming Bush for Syria. Five years is a looong time to get your players. Chiz won a national championship and has been fired and now is looking redemption on Tv. Five years you should have been long enough to fill the cupboard.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

UNI game will do more to hurt recruiting than any other past five year game....

Defensive line is the hardest position to recruit. Only so many big bodies available. It will never be a position of strength for us, year in and year out.

Having a year were you play a JuCo with redshirt freshman and players that switched positions is very common.

Anyone that has paid attention to the roster could see this coming for a couple years. This season has had down year written on it for awhile.
