    Interesting Stats Entering the Season

I was surprised to read the stat regarding holding opponents below 40 pts in 20 games straight. Also nice to read about the success against Top 25 opponents on the road, considering where we were at prior to CPR.

Big 12 Week 1: Did you know? - ESPN

    • Former Iowa State great Todd Blythe takes on the Cyclones this weekend as Northern Iowa’s receivers coach. He holds the ISU career records for receiving yards (3,096), catches (176) and touchdown catches (31).
    • Iowa State’s defense has held opponents to less than 40 points in 20 straight games. No other Big 12 school can say that.
    • Only two teams have beat a ranked opponent on the road in each of the past three seasons: Iowa State and Ohio State.

Hopefully we can keep these running this year

Re: Interesting Stats Entering the Season

    This is a crazy stat:
Only 11 FBS schools begin the 2013 season without any quarterbacks on their roster who have started a game. Texas Tech and Baylor are two of them.
We play three of those 11 schools.

Who's the 3rd? If I guess Iowa, would I be correct?

Re: Interesting Stats Entering the Season

I will add in an interesting stat from cyclones.com.

For Week 1 teams in 2012, only 17 teams lost their first game and went on to have a winning record last year. And for the teams that lost week 1, their combined record was 100 games below .500 (238-336).

Pretty much makes UNI a must-win (for many reasons).

Re: Interesting Stats Entering the Season

    • Oklahoma is No. 2 behind Houston over the past two seasons in this stat: First downs from passing plays. OU has 430. Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and West Virginia rank No. 3, 4 and 5 in that category.

at least 30 of those were on Cliff Stokes.

Also, why are all the Big 12 bloggers from the Oklahoman. It seems like that's the prereq.

This type of reasoning always cracks me up.

Teams lose their first game because they are bad teams which lead to bad records.

Statistics are a reflection of results, not a measure of urgency (must-win).

If we have a losing record, it won't be because a loss in week 1 to UNI doomed us to a statistical trend. It will be because we aren't a good team.

ESPN's little farm system. Honestly though its probably because they've covered or been to a majority of the Big 12 schools. They'd be familiar with OU and OSU. The Kansas schools are just north a few hours. Lubbock isn't far and the rest of the Texas schools are south on I-35. I know Trotter has been to Ames before.

Correct. Kirk never pulled Vanderberg despite getting blown out by Penn State and Michigan.

For a young team like ISU trying to get to 6-6, dropping a non-conf game makes it very difficult. If you cannot see that applying to ISU, not sure I can help you. You really think UNI would not have been a must-win if we finish 5-7 and beating them would have made us bowl eligible? ISU could still have a pretty good team and finish 5-7 given our conference slate.

the stat was referring to starts, so even if Rudoch played cleanup minutes, Iowa would still be on that list.

the number of schools without a QB that has taken a single snap would be much less than 11, I'd think.
