    Bubble Screens

Last year, Rhoads talked a lot early in the season about "running the same play alot" (bubble screens) and wanting to get more than 2-3 yards each time. Yet, it seemed that we struggled all season to do the good blocking necessary for this to work.

Do you think we will see as much use of the bubble screen this year? Will the use of the Pistol reduce the role of the bubble screen?

Personally, I would like to see much less use of the bubble screens. I would prefer to see us use lots of double TE sets and rely more on dumping the ball over the middle for 6-7 yards. And against, UNI's inexperienced DBs, I hope we can get plenty of throws downfield for bigger gains. The combination of short passes under the coverage and longer routes that stretch the offense should keep the UNI defense honest and give us even more opportunities to run the ball for substantial gains.

Bubble screens and read options after first downs...those, I never want to see again.

If the wide receivers blocked, they would have worked...unfortunately...

First play of the tulsa game last year, nearly a fumble.

Don't I know it, I saw that play 47 times since CycloneTV launched.

You'd think after that many times he would expect it and catch it.

They are designed to keep the defense honest by not letting them stack the box on an obvious running down. Although we do them more often than I would like, they have a purpose. I would just like to see them less often.

    Re: Bubble Screens

I'm not positive about this but I think some of the bubble screens were packaged with running plays. If they kept similar packages despite the small change in formation I think we'll still see a lot.

    Re: Bubble Screens

Bubble screens worked the best they ever have last year. Most resulted in gains of 4-7 yds which is a very successful play.

Our best execution of the bubble screen was in the TCU game. Don't know that we came anywhere close in all of the other games, but that game we were on (Barnett was QBing, I believe).

    Re: Bubble Screens

Our WR's ability to block on the bubble screens was usually pretty atrocious last year. We've got some bigger WR's out there this year so hopefully they are better blockers. If Bundrage is explosive enough to return kicks then I could definitely see the coaches wanting to get him a couple bubble screens a game.

    Re: Bubble Screens

Bundrage broke out a huge gain on a wide receiver screen in the spring game and I think Daley did too. It's not going to completely go away as long as we have fast receivers.
