    SEZ quotes today

I posted this in another thread, but maybe it should have its own. Some promising remarks on the SEZ project from president Leath today. It's good to hear directly from Leath that they are seriously considering moving this project forward within the next couple years.

interesting quotes on the south endzone in today's Iowa State Daily:

Facilities highlight rise; Gateway Project lingers
There is a drawer on Pollard’s desk where he keeps all of the new facility presentations from his tenure.
In the last eight years, Iowa State has spent more than $100 million on facilities, including a new track, soccer and softball complex that opened last year.
“We’ve come a long ways,” Pollard said. “When I try to remember them all, I usually end up forgetting some.”
The next upgrade that lingers is what Pollard refers to as the Gateway Project. He laughs as he looks out to the south endzone, which fans have clamored to see bowled in.
“If we could afford it, yeah, we could do seating,” Pollard said. “But if we do that, we may be stuck. We put in more seating, we have to address where all those people are going to park, what are we doing to Reiman Gardens, what are we doing with the entrance to campus?”
Pollard would love to see the project move forward, but he knows it is about more than bowling-in an end zone. Leath said he thinks the project will eventually happen, mentioning the current low interest rates.
“If you’re going to do a project like that, you’d rather do it when you can get the money cheaply,” Leath said. “So we are looking very seriously as to what the plans would be over the next couple of years.”

As has been learned with the growth of the entire athletic department, things take time. The common goal is to get it right the first time.
“We don’t want to do this twice,” Leath said. “It’s going to be a very big, expensive project. You want to get it right.

I had not considered the parking. Big factor when you are potentially adding that many more bodies. BTW, how many seats would be added? Anyone heard any initial estimate or range? 15k about right?

not sure on the exact number of seats it would add, that seems like it would be in the ballpark range though

70,000+ cardinal and gold fans. Now that would be cool.

Parking seriously should be a non-issue. As should Reiman Gardens.

Wouldn't really work out that way since those seats are replacing hillside "seats."

I'm not sure if the net capacity increase would be quite that much, but who knows haven't heard anything about what the capacity increase might be since the project was originally considered several years ago and that would have put capacity somewhere in the 60K-65K range.

It would increase the capacity if it was an upper deck also!

Even if 1/2 the parking around the stadium disappeared ISU would still have a better parking situation than the vast majority of BCS teams.

I can see them saying parking is an issue but I've been to a lot of stadiums and the Jack is still the leader.

Would parking really disappear or are they just referring to the need to have ADDITIONAL parking to handle the larger crowds.

    Re: SEZ quotes today

There is no way the first phase of the SEZ would increase capacity to 70,000 plus. That would be extremely aggressive. There will probably be about 20,000 additionally physical seats, but obviously the hillsides are lost so the capacity would only go up about 8,000 at absolute most IMO.

Also, parking should not be an issue. It will get taken care of. It isn't like the project will be stopped due to lack of parking. That seems ridiculous to me.

    Re: SEZ quotes today

Even though it may take a bit longer, I agree with the last quote by Leath that the need to get it right, best to have parking and everything worked out before you build it so you don't have to go back and make expensive changes to it right away. I have a feeling this thing will be really nice when it finally gets done.
