I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Re: Monday Musings: Welcome to the future

Agree completely, Chris. Rhoads has emerged from a tough transition with the fan base behind him and excited for the future. That was job #1 for anyone coming and cleaning up after the Chizik regime. Obtaining the level of enthusiasm in the fans that he has is quite remarkable. Now he's entering the "make or break" years for a regime that has stabilized. It's a very clear and predictable pattern which is evident (albeit more compressed) in the NFL as well as in college. You set out to install your own approaches and hope to survive the early years with some equity in tact, and some level of goodwill in the fans. Patience, re-tooling and re-building are the mantras. Promote the heck out of your accomplishments no matter how small - we got great PR mileage (pardon the pun) out of the locker-room moments and some great wins. That's setting up the future. The 'likeability' factor is off the charts for Rhoads and company - you just flat out like the guy.

The next stage is essentially the years that are revealing of what a regime can get accomplished with all the known resource and obstacles - all your own players, coaches, philosophy, teaching skills, development program, and so on. You know the league landscape, competitors, coaching, environment and the like. This has been made more difficult given the re-alignment landscape but Rhoads (and Pollard) have helped overcome that as well. You pretty much know what you have after a couple of years into phase two. This year and next year are the "show me" years, and will generally determine the forward arc of the program. We're so young this year, that I don't see it happening. 2014 really needs to be a step forward to the momentum to keep going. I might need to be a 1999 where we take some lumps and take a step backward before taking a big step forward in 2000. In my mind 2014 is setup for a "Big Step," so I think we all need to temper our expectations a little bit and look at this year as a gaining experience year for a big push next year, along the lines of 9+ wins.

So, would you be able to swallow a 5-7 season in 2013, if you knew you it was preparing you for 9 or 10 wins in 2014? I know, I know....that's a world of speculation and conjecture. Evaluating regimes takes the LONG view, though. Rhoads and company have weathered some really terrible times and we've emerged with more enthusiasm and a sense of momentum that's probably more than he deserves based only on the W-L record. It's because of that likeability and the fact that he's an awesome fit (perhaps perfect?) for Iowa State, and it's the staff knows what they are doing (I have a couple of lingering doubts overall, but it's still the best we've had here in a long time). The present is good and the future is better - just the way you want it. That's how I see it from the cheap seats.

    Cheers

Good article. Chris, have you ever thought of or been offered taking over the Ames tribune sports editor spot? Your stuff is pretty good and better than what they have and it seems that they could kill two birds with one stone. Also, I heard that the guy doing it currently hates ISU fans.

I can personally attest to Corey being on of the biggest Cyclone fans around. When I got to school in '01, Corey would host myself and several others at his tailgates due to being good friends with his brother. I pretty much learned how to tailgate from him. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

Calling for a guy to get fired because he pointed out that there is a segment of our fanbase that is way to thin skinned?

Nope, no irony or lack of self awareness there. That's for sure.

Im not familiar with whoever does it now nor am I calling for him to be fired. I just thought since Chris writes great stuff that they could publish it both on this site as well as in their paper, hints the 2 birds w/ one stone.

    Calm down broseph

Re: Monday Musings: Welcome to the future

People have to remember all the facilities that Pollard has upgraded or fully rebuilt in his time at ISU. There is a brand new track and field facility, soccer field, and softball field (if I remember correctly but I could be wrong). Look at Hilton being upgraded (and flooded) plus the new practice facilities for both Men's and Women's basketball. Finally look at football alone. The indoor practice field (this may have been started under the other AD), renovations to the Jacobson building, the new concourses on both sides for JTS, the new huge scoreboard, and then the new football building. Plus there has been a new building for athlete academics. PJ has put tons of money into ISU athletics in a short amount of time and with a pretty small budget.

All those new buildings and upgrades have to be paid for and I know people are excited about the future of the SEZ, but pullback for a moment and think about what all has been done for ISU athletics as a whole. As CW points out the foundation for football has been set but we need to wait to see what comes next. CW has also pointed out that a new press box or expansion of suites would bring in more money for football than the SEZ, so that's probably going to happen first. The SEZ is probably 3-5 years out depending on what happens on the field in that time.

Yes, the future is bright and PJ has made an impact for years to come at ISU.

Ha! I read that article and I have some issues with it. First, I've always thought the 'feud' with Ebben is mostly just for fun. And Forde had to expect to whatever school he named with the worst town to complain about it. And I'll excuse whatever happened after the Kansas game. That was a travesty and it wasn't Iowa State's best moment, but it was understandable.

Iowa State fans do have a bit of a victim mentality, but it isn't as bad as Bobby claims. And Bobby's idea that Iowa State fans need to go back to being cheerful? That sounds a lot like going back to being the lovable losers.
