    DirecTV Genie

I upgraded to Genie yesterday. Install was a piece of cake, did it myself in about an hour.

Weird thing is, I can't seem to program my new Genie remote to operate my TV. When I go to the remote setup it takes me to the IR/RF setup screen instead. I go through that process and then it never takes me to the part where I can program my TV into the remote. Anyone else have experience with this?

Fortunately, the old remotes still work but I think I'm going to have to return those with my old receivers in a few days.

I just use the same old white remote with my Genie. Can you send the new remote back and keep the old one?

I just got a reply on their tech forum and they said I can keep the old remotes so I'm good to go!

Potentially dumb question but what the hell. How do you upgrade your DirecTV equipment? Mine is about 2.5 years old and I'd thought about getting the Genie. Do you pay a fee? Make another two year commitment?

    Yes and Yes.

I wish this thread was about the DirectTV Genie Girl.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

The thread IS about her. She's inside each and every Genie piece of hardware. Nobody except DirecTV themselves has figured out the correct magical procedure to get her to come out.

You can usually make a deal with them on getting it cheaper. I have never paid full price for an upgrade, but I have had DTV for 16 years.

Here is what happened with me. I called about a month ago and was told I was not eligible and could only upgrade at full price, which was I think $200 for the Genie and $100 for each mini client. However, if you enroll for the wire protection plan at $7.99 per month it entitles you to free equipment upgrades every two years, in addition to no questions asked equipment returns/exchanges, free in-home service for any problems and blah blah blah.

So I got suckered in and enrolled. I called again Wednesday and found out I wasn't eligible for a free upgrade yet but I could get a discounted upgrade of $100 for the Genie with three free clients (additional clients were only $50/each.) So I went for it. I did have to sign up for two more years and it reset my equipment upgrade clock, but I did get NFL Sunday Ticket for free this year for re-upping.
