What is best alternative to Mediacom Internet and phone in Ames?

I'm sure there are probably other threads about this, but I just thought I would throw it out there again.

I'm having all kinds of problems with Mediacom Internet. It seems like I have them out here every couple of weeks trying to improve their signal. Actually, it has been like 12-15 service calls over a 2 year period. There is a different tech each time......they get it working, or so it seems, and then a new problem comes up soon after they leave. Each tech seems to have a different diagnosis of the problem, and a different solution.

I like Mediacom in that they have excellent download speeds (as high as 23) when it is working right, but it is just not very consistent. I also will probably keep the Mediacom cable just because of the Cyclones.tv channel now.

I have checked with Century Link to start.......but they do not have their really highest speed internet available in my area, so they are out of the picture.

Who else is a possibility in Ames? Are there any alternatives? I can throw the land-line home phone in too if it helps to get a better package. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The only other option I'm familiar with is ICS, but they are crap. I would not recommend going with them

You're pretty much stuck with Mediacom. ICS and CenturyLink have sucky speeds. There's probably some other option I'm unaware of.

If Centurylink doesn't offer a decent speed, which is very likely since it seems to be limited to specific areas, then Mediacom is the only high speed game in town. Complain louder until they fix the problem.

Go to US Cellular and get a wireless hot spot for internet. They also have a wireless home phone package.

Do this if you either never use your internet or like to pay a lot of money for stuff.

Smoke signals. Otherwise Mediacom is the only game in town worthwhile.

What speeds can you get with CenturyLink? I get 7M, and honestly it is fast enough for anything I need. We can have 2 HD streams of netflix going at the same time, and someone else playing games.

I have CenturyLink in Ames as well. Just checked my speed and I get 11Mbps. We have five people here and I have never experienced a slowdown in speed or had issues with anything loading so it is more than enough for us.

    Definitely look into CenturyLink

CenturyLink coverage is really varied in Ames. The South Duff area, for example, can get packages with up to 20 mbps. But just take Airport Road to the west a couple miles, and the best they offer is 1.5 mbps. Central Ames is somewhere in the middle. If you can get their higher tier packages, they might be worth it. It all just depends on where in town you live.

Re: What is best alternative to Mediacom Internet and phone in Ames?

I would second (or third, or fourth, I've lost track) the recommendation for Centurylink. I got fed up with Mediacom and made the switch to a DirecTV/Centurylink bundle. My internet certainly isn't as fast as it was with Mediacom, but it does just fine for casual internet surfing and some downloading. If you are streaming alot or are very reliant on high speed internet it may not be for you, but I have rarely had an issue with it. Let's just say any downgrade in its speed is quickly made up by the fact I no longer have to deal with Mediacom.

Yeah, I've tried putting in addresses of friends and family and it's very sporadic, it seems like the number of people who can get 11+ is pretty small.
