    Dan Gables Fight

Figure it can go in here. Haven't finished it yet, but it is good so far.

    Re: Dan Gables Fight

sounds like a bit of a whack job to me.... But I would never say this to his face.

"I never wore a mouthpiece," he says suddenly.
He sticks out his tongue. Gouges and divots cover the bottom, like a target-practice soda can, deep scars and even holes, dozens of them. Wearing a mouthpiece would have prevented the holes and the mouthfuls of blood he swallowed and spit out, but it would also have made him weak, made his jaw slide, made him feel vulnerable. He welcomed the hurt. Now he clenches his teeth. He's always punished weakness with suffering, putting on a war mask for the world and for himself. His face hardens, his mouth curving into a frown, his muscles firing, looking like a weapon.
"It makes you strong!" he roars.
Gable leaps from the hot tub and dives into the drift of snow.
"Ahhhhhhhh," he moans, a cloud of vapor exploding as bare skin hits cold ground, moving his arms and legs back and forth, carving out wedges. Gable is spread-eagled in his backyard making goddamn snow angels. Just as quickly he jumps back into the hot water, his body temperature skyrocketing, the snow melting off.
"It burns," he says, gritting his teeth, and he sounds supremely happy

A lot of respect for that guy. I went to college with his youngest daughter at Loras. Nice girl. Man, I hope he can get them to keep wrestling as an Olympic sport.

Big deal, I wrestled from 6th to 8th grade and never wore a mouthpiece.

I have no room to talk.. I played basketball in Junior High and had to wear a mouthpiece because I had braces.. And it hurts when you get hit in the face with a basketball with braces..

This was a fabulous article. Gable is a BAMF. Super intense. I think international wrestling is making the rules changes they need to make, and also adding more womens' divisions. Hopefully this gets the job done.

Man, not going to read this now because of length, but it looks like a great article. Will look forward to it later. Love it when in depth pieces are still written.

    Re: Dan Gables Fight

Incredible article. However, I got the sense that Thompson tried to paint Gabel as watching his kingdom crumble around him. I understand his body is prohbiting from doing what he loves, and that the IOC getting rid of Olympics is also troubling to him, but I can't imagine him looking back on his career and feeling anything but proud of what he created. By the end, it makes it sound like now all he has is his family. But for the last 40 years he has remained the most iconic figure in his sport, and I'm not sure there is another athlete who can say the same. I felt the end of the story tried to make this into a tragedy when it is, in many ways, an incredible success story.
