Question Could Google getting NFL Sunday Ticket indirectly benefit ISU?

OK….stay with me here for a moment.

Just saw this story that NFL Ticket goes up for bid soon. Google has some awfully deep pockets and maybe interested in pursuing.

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/100977669

This got me wondering about this scenario specifically related to cable access in the state of Iowa and ISU.

If DirecTV loses probably its biggest selling point and thus potentially resulting in defections (both residential and commercial), could this mean a boast to Cyclone.TV and thus Iowa State both in terms of exposure and financially?

Currently, a lot of sport’s fans and bars would rather stick with DirecTV given NFL Sunday Ticket and forgo Mediacom to have access to Cyclones.TV. If NFL Ticket is taken off the table as a selling point for DirecTV and all other sports content is essentially equal, do we see movement to Mediacom and thus more eyeballs on Cyclone.TV in the future? i.e…if ISU can point directly to Mediacom to show bump in subscriptions tied directly to desire for Cyclone.TV access, won’t ISU be able to get a bigger slice of the pie in the future?

Bottom-line: taking personal bias and individual hatred for the evil cable company off the table and looking at this big picture (ie…meaning you don’t personally have to switch), could this be an overall positive development for the ISU brand should Google take over NFL Sunday Ticket?

I doubt it. I don't think any of my friends buy DTV solely for Sunday Ticket.

I guess I should have said individuals who would otherwise consider the desire to have Cyclone.TV, but defer to DirectTV due to NFL Ticket. On this forum, NFL Ticket seems to be a big selling point within the 1 or 2 threads over the years related to this topic.

Although I'm certainly not always happy with Directv, I don't see any way they let that contract get away from them. NFL Sunday Ticket is Huge for them and I'm sure they will open up their vaults to keep it in their greedy little hands.

Agreed that DirecTV will do everything possible to keep NFL Sunday Ticket . That said, CBS was left standing drop jawed when upstart network Fox came in and outbid them for the rights to broadcast NFC games a decade or so ago. Likewise, CBS later did the same to NBC for the AFC rights. In neither of these situations, was the losing network wanting to get out of the NFL business. Those hurt.

I have zero idea how this works. Could it be a closed bidding process so neither would know exactly how much they’d need to bid to win? If so, DirecTV loses a lot of their ability to control their destiny. All they can do is put in their best bid possible and hopes it is larger. Again….can they outbid the likes of Google (if Google really wants this)?

The downside: if this ends up being a bidding war, guess who ends up paying in the end?

Re: Could Google getting NFL Sunday Ticket indirectly benefit ISU?

I think it is more likely that the NFL will allow all providers access to NFL Sunday ticket. Also would not be surprised if the model changed and you can order one teams games versus having to pay for all of them. These seem like logical steps. DTV was the test pilot of this sort of thing for the NFL, for that they have been rewarded handsomely, now it is time for the NFL to maximize profits and offer Sunday Ticket through all cable, satellite and internet providers.

Think about what Apple did with the iPhone, while not exactly the same it does provide an example of how much money was left on the table when they tied themselves to one company.

Google getting it could be a great way for them to get the chromecast platform into a lot more living rooms.

Had CNN on in the background, so wasn't paying close attention, but they were talking about this topic. Almost sure they suggested Apple could be interested as well.

I believe Apple already offers replays of games on iTunes. Not a stretch that they would want to be able to offer live games.

Mediacom in general just sucks, their programming, their internet, and the customer service. I have no choice on the internet, its either theirs or the $80/month internet through our local telephone company. Tried to see what cable added to my internet(which is cable internet) would be and nobody could give me an answer, all said I had to pay the early exit on my internet then get one of their bundles.

I was going to get Directv this fall but then heard rumors of NFL maybe leaving it, so now i'm holding out. If google gets NFL, would you have to get Chromecast to run it, or do you think they would leave it up for any browser platform?

Re: Could Google getting NFL Sunday Ticket indirectly benefit ISU?

If Google gets Sunday Ticket, this really doesn't impact Mediacom, and it fact may hurt it. This will begin a larger push by the segment of the population that want to watch all of their TV on the internet. The only thing missing from the formula is live sports. Why have either Mediacom or DTV, if I can watch all my live sports on the internet and have netflix, hulu, or whatever you choose to watch my other programming.
