    Big 12's best fans

Pretty ridiculous. This is just the same crap as the worst mascot, uniforms, road trip, etc. Regurgitated crap.

Looks like support measured against student body size may have been a significant factor. ISU's is 2nd largest in the conference (behind UT), so that could have hurt us.

It could have hurt us. The more likely scenario is they're a "paper" in Dallas that sees Iowa State as nothing more than an outpost in some frozen wasteland that doesn't deserve a spot in the Big 12 because we are Iowa State, no matter how uninformed or asinine their opinion is. Not butthurt over it, just saying that opinions are like ***holes... and they're a bunch of ***holes too.

    Re: Big 12's best fans

What they ought to do it come up with some formula that takes into account attendance vs. winning percentage. Throw in a measure of fan travel. And some way to incorporate merchandise sales/fan. Not sure how you would pull all of that together but that seems like it would describe the best fan base... Who goes to games even when the team isn't winning, buys the team's stuff, and travels to see the team play on the road?

Not saying ISU would be at the top but we sure as hell wouldn't be third from the bottom.

Some of TCU's students were throwing stuff at our bench during last year's game. I remember Wally yelling back at them looking absolutely furious. Does this list account for sportsmanship?

I don't know how any objective set of factors could possibly rank ISU fans at the bottom.

I was at the game too. The fans had terrible sportsmanship, I didn't mind i was walking out with a huge grin on my face. The only redeeming thing about their fan base was an old man walked up to my father and shook hands for a good game and apologized for the fans, and said how they should be grateful to be in the Big 12.

I always love how Texas and Oklahoma are always considered to have some of the best fans, because being two of the most successful programs in football history has absolutely nothing to do with that.

Yeah, i mean, we're all homers here, but the fact that we've had some of the worst football history in the league, have only been mediocre by most standards recently, and are a northern outpost and a low population state that we have to split with another BCS level program (one that has been far more successful on the national stage the last 30 years) yet we're selling out our tickets says something about our fanbase.

Exactly. I mean, how can you slam on a fanbase that SELLS EVERY SINGLE ******* TICKET?

It makes no sense, AT ALL. Thankfully, most people involved with this conference can realize this. If you read other Big 12 message boards, ISU fans are well spoken of by everyone but KU basketball fans.

So I was bored and decided to try and find an easy way to rank the fans of the big twelve schools using last years results. What I did was divide the home attendance % by the winning % because that will reward fans who show up when their team is losing and it was simple to do. I didn't include decimals for the average attendance but for the rest went to four decimals. Since I only averaged the home attendance % I used the regular season records to find the winning % My rank was 1: Kansas, 2: Iowa State, 3: Oklahoma State, 4: West Virginia, 5: TCU, 6: Texas Tech, 7: Texas, 8: Baylor 9: Oklahoma, 10: KSU

    Here's my data:

    Avg. Attendance; Attendance %; Winning %; Attendance %/Winning %
    Baylor: 41,194; .8239; .5833; 1.4124
    Iowa State: 55,273; 1.0050; .5000; 2.0100
    Kansas: 41,328; .8254; .0833; 9.9088
    Kansas State: 50,277; 1.0055; .9167; 1.0969
    Oklahoma: 85,243; 1.0381; .8333; 1.2458
    Oklahoma State: 56,556; .9392; .5833; 1.6101
    Texas: 100,884; 1.0076; .6667; 1.5113
    Texas Christian: 46,046; .9209; .5833; 1.5788
    Texas Tech: 55,345; .9073; .5833; 1.5555
    West Virginia: 55,915; .9319; .5833; 1.5976

    Re: Big 12's best fans

The problem is that it skews data towards teams that underperform. You have KSU as the last place team, yet they have an attendance percentage of 1.0055--slightly over capacity for the season. They're lowest because they won the most, so in effect they're being punished for that.

There's not a good measure, I don't think. I'm impressed that we have sold out tickets this year given our limited success and difficult schedule this year--I do think we have some of the best fans in the Big 12. We're passionate, and we support our team when enduring bad seasons, and we are very grateful when we have good seasons.

All the evidence that I need is the 25,000 fans I saw with me in Memphis for our bowl game, against a team that we'd already played. We support our team as strong as anyone else, especially given our program's success level.
