Re: Camp Report: Defense responds in scrimmage No. 2

Love seeing that Irving is doing really well in there. And what a great quote from Rhoads!

    "Quote of the day

    Paul Rhoads on David Irving…
“If Rodney (Coe) is new to the position than David is a dagone baby. But that baby takes big steps.”

If he's this much of an impact right now, I can't wait to see what Irving will do this season. It would appear that the coaches were right about this move, for now.

Have a sneaking suspicion that this move will be talked about in dang near ever pregame convo for televised games.

Imagine Coe and Irving together in the middle in obvious passing situations. If they don't get the sack they leave someone wide open at least.

Sounds like great news on the DL. Now, how is the offense progressing? Hopefully Sam is the man this year.

Re: Camp Report: Defense responds in scrimmage No. 2

Oh great, now our offense stinks. Just think how bad our O-line must be if our D-line is getting pressure on the QB!

Just kidding of course. That's the problem with scrimmages though. If one side of the ball does well, everyone assumes the other side of the ball stinks.

I see Irving snagging several RB's running thru the holes we normally wouldn't get, because of his wingspan

That and with his long arms he should be able to bat some balls down or at least interrupt the passing lanes.

Re: Camp Report: Defense responds in scrimmage No. 2

This seems to be the pattern every year. First scrimmage either the D or O dominates. 2nd scrimmage the other unit responds.

More of the same. I'll wait for gameday to see what kind of team we really have.

It sounds like some of the RS Freshman are really stepping up their play, which is very encouraging. It also sounds like some of the defensive players are making plays more consistently.

Re: Camp Report: Defense responds in scrimmage No. 2

So....is Irving slotted to play NG competing for playing time against Walter Woods? Or is he behind Brandon Jensen and likely even with Coe for the back up DT position?

Both Irving & Coe are exclusively playing the 3-technique.

Can someone here with better DL knowledge than me explain the difference between the 3 and 4 technique?

Is there a really big difference?
