This one might get pretty ugly also. Maybe Creighton has a coach that would be interested in the job.

Dan McCarney would take the job over Northern Illinois.

Arkansas would be a good position for him.

Arkansas should go after Tommy's brother Terry. He has said he wants to get back into coaching this year and he probably still has a lot of ties to that area.

Tommy is a good guy though. I met him about 3 years ago at a car show in Jacksonville, Florida. He was signing autographs, and after he signed a t-shirt for me, I asked him if he wanted to have dinner with me and my posse. He declined, but was incredibly nice about it. For that I will always respect Tommy Bowden. Which is more than I can say for a lot of people.

im a bit surprised by this. seems he has been on the hot seat at clemson since he took the job. his teams seem to start out every year on fire out of the gates but then they falter down the stretch. if he doesn't have a good year next year, he may be regretting this decision.

They could always hire his Westwood One sportscaster brother. He says he is looking for a head coaching job.

Prior to this "new" contract extension both parties, either Clemson or himself, would have to ay $2.5 million to get out of the contract.

I'm sure he won't be regretting it too much if he's fired next season.

yeah, the coaching search for FB is (or has) become the mirror image of the basketball coaching search. I think they're starting to give up on finding another head coach and weighing their chances at a decent assistant. Nice test for the new AD on his hiring abilities

I see the Arkansas job kind of like the Iowa job. Arkansas fans want to be a top tier program and think they are a top tier program, but in reality, they aren't. Arkansas fired Nutt (or pushed him out) after an 8-4 season...in the SEC...after beating #1 LSU. Not smart in my eyes.

I agree with you about the Arkansas job being like the Iowa job. Fans here tend to be a little delusional when thinking they're top tier although they were slightly brought back to earth after the basketball coaching search.

I disagree about Nutt though. There's been way too much controversy in the FB program and Nutt was right in the center of it. He's the reason the fan base split and it was quite obvious that he could never get it reunited. This really had nothing to do with wins/losses. Nutt leaving was really the best solution for him and the university.

I've heard over and over from the talking heads in the media about how Nutt "wasn't a good fit" and how he "rubbed people the wrong way". What was that all about? He won some games there but it sounds like people didn't like him. You have any thoughts about that?

It's really an odd situation. He really had strong fan support especially after the great recruiting season when he landed most of the Springdale players and hired their HC (Malzahn). Fans thought life was perfect. But shortly afterwards it began to unravel when some of these same recruits defected after one year. Then it began to get ugly with the whole Malzahn thing (not letting him run the offense, hiring another OC behind his back). The media and fan base began to grumble.

Then came the Mustain fiasco which only grew worse when the nasty emails to Mustain surfaced. It escalated when someone was able to obtain his cell phone records indicating he might be having an affair. It became a never ending court battle. As always the media ate it up and the fan base had a permanent wedge driven through it beyond repair. That became evident on a nationally televised game where numerous signs emerged, "Houston we HAVE a problem" and one shirt that said "Houston you ARE the problem".

Nutt admitted that he would never be able to repair the damage which brings us to the present situation. Is he decent as a coach...yes. He just did a poor job of handling situations on and off the field and at some point he just lost control.

The bad press generated from all of this is most likely the reason that Arkansas is really struggling to find a new HC.
