Re: Kindergarten kids with cell phone?

IMO Kindergarten is too young. For us it was when we felt comfortable with them walking home from school and they got involved in after school activities. One thing I like about them having phones is using the Footprints app, we can see exactly where they (well their phones technically) are at all times which is really nice.

Same here. With my oldest we waited until middle school, when she'd be walking home and also participating in before and after school activities.

There are no reasons for a child to have a cell phone at school...regardless of age.

Re: Kindergarten kids with cell phone?

I remember about five years back I heard that they had a couple of different models of phones that were for young kids just for emergencies - I think they had, like, four programmable buttons so you could call these 4 numbers. (Probably mom, dad, grandma, grandpa or something.) Six years old seems a little too young to be anywhere that an adult wouldn't be able to call the parents, but I can see it a few years after that if it's VERY limited in scope (like the programmable numbers and limited talk time).

Re: Kindergarten kids with cell phone?

I got my cellphone in my 8th grade year when I played football and basketball. I bought my own smartphone before I went to college and the main reason I got it is to look at my email (the other stuff is nice too).

How long before we get 2nd graders with smartphones posting on CF?

If one of those 2nd graders turns out to be the next jake knott or AJ Klein or possibly KO I think it would be well worth it!!

I'm on the same boat here. Got my first phone in 7th grade and bought myself an iPhone my junior year. Which was last year..

Another sign that times are changing. One of my fraternity brothers friends from high school invited him to his wedding on facebook, facebook.

those kids have bad parents, don't let your kids hang out with them.

Ditto. Granted, I was kind of anti social in high school and if I went out somewhere and really needed one I just borrowed one of my parents.

Growing up when Johnny Gosch and Eugene Martin were kidnapped, there would have been a justifiable run on cell phones by parents had they been available.
Since that could happen anytime anyway, that would be one reason. Just making sure that they're alive and such.

There was a huge sexting scandal at New Trier High School (North Shore Chicago area) back in 2012 that led to quite a few guys getting into trouble with the law and one girl who is now very popular, since the north side of Chicagoland has seen her completely nude. It's just a matter of time before I hear about a sexting scandal at some elementary school.
I totally get it, but you don't need a smartphone to snapchat. Any 8 year old with an iPod touch has as much snapchat capability as anyone with a smartphone as long as he has wifi.
