Better Model, Cyclone TV o B10 Network?

What's the better/more beneficial TV model for the two instate schools? Cyclone TV or BTN? My vote is BTN. The fact it's a national product with excellent production values and a large amount of valuable content more than makes up for the fact your school only gets a 1/12th share.

BTN. Cyclones.TV would only stand a chance if cable companies went a la carte for their channels. Even then, probably BTN.

It'll be interesting to see how things change in distribution of media content in the next 5-10 years. Just because the BTN is a cash cow today is doesn't necessarily mean it will be forever.

You could make a case for both but for me its Cyclones.tv....all cyclones all the time. But for the school itself, without a doubt B10 network.

Big Ten. Although the games are boring, that's something good they have going for them.

Re: Better Model, Cyclone TV o B10 Network?

Neither. I think a hybrid model will be the future. I'm not entirely convinced that cable networks aren't riding high on a massive sports bubble. I would laugh if downward economic pressures and greed conspired to blow up realignment mania.

In an ideal model, I can see each individual school controlling their own network online while the conference takes a "licensing fee" from each school to bundle their packages together. So I could either pay $80 a year for Cyclone TV, or pay a discounted cost of $300 to get the Big 12 TV package, which allows me access to all Big 12 games, etc. Continuing to the top, I could pay $1000 for a College Sports TV package, which includes top-down access to each conference's games, etc.

Of course, I still wish each conference had 10 teams.

Re: Better Model, Cyclone TV o B10 Network?

This is a silly question. It isn't like Cyclones.tv is our only source of income, but it is based entirely on what most agree the future of this industry will look like.

Also, I'm fine with the split of the rest of the money 10 ways rather than 14 (or more). There is only so much to go around.

Re: Better Model, Cyclone TV o B10 Network?

In todays world, there is absolutely no question the BTN is better, and it not even close. If TV ever goes the direction of a la carte, then we can have this debate, but even then, the BTN is still in a very decent position, IMO.

The answer is B10 Network. Until Cyclones.TV starts streaming football games and I can cut the cable. I think ISU sports are the only reason I still subscribe to pay TV

As long as money is determined by forcing every single person in a state to have your station regardless of fandom, B10 Network will be better.

Re: Better Model, Cyclone TV o B10 Network?

B10 for now, future Cyclones.tv. With ESPN and Fox driving costs higher and higher, B10 is going to get squeezed out of the tiers they are on, and as more people cut the cable cord the revenues are going to fall while ISU controls it's destiny with 3rd tier rights.

Pac 12 network 5 years ago could have been on Directv, etc., but now that the climate has changed, you won't find them on the big national provider yet. Same with LHN. Big 10 was visionary enough to get the brand out there, but an online model is the way of the future. Just need ISU and Neulion to support Roku, Google TV, etc. vs. having to suggest people hook their laptop or other device up to their tv to watch it.

So far, how can anyone argue against an extra $20M per school per year?

Re: Better Model, Cyclone TV o B10 Network?

I don't think it's really a fair comparison. If you are comparing BTN, then you have to compare it against the Big12 TV contract + Cyclones.tv In that scenario, I think it kills BTN, because the national money is there and the third tier rights are gravy. From a publicity standpoint, ISU also wins since Iowa will be sharing exposure with other conference teams in Iowa while ISU still gets their game televised if the conference doesn't pick it up. If you are looking for a game to watch, I think more Iowans would watch ISU vs anyone over Maryland vs Rutgers or Indiana
