    UNI Game Position Match-ups

As a UNI fan I thought about the match-up in this game and found myself liking UNI's chances at actually winning this game.

QB- UNI>ISU UNI has arguably the best QB in the state in Kollmorgen and has Nebraska transfer Brion Carnes competing for the starting position. The QB position is still a question mark for ISU as Richardson has only played in a few games.

RB- UNI>ISU David Johnson is a beast and was a 1000 yard rusher and led the MVC in scoring (18 TDs). Johnson is also a receiving threat with 4 receiving TD (2 against Wisconsin). ISU isn't far behind at RB though, White and Johnson have the potential to be a very good RB tandem (both rushed for 500 yards) and ISU will feature them as the passing game is still questionable.

WR- UNI>ISU UNI has 2 starting receivers returning and another starter returning from injury. UNI features two receivers that are 6'3'' Vereen and LeMaster. The slot receiver Owens is a Wes Walker type who has very dependable hands and runs very quick routes. ISU has West as a reliable target but are still looking for others to step up. (Side note Todd Blythe is in his first year as the WR coach at UNI)

TE- UNI<ISU Both teams return their top TE but ISU has the edge in TD's. Brun had 300 yards last year with 6 TDs and Rohr for UNI had 200 yards and 2 TDs. ISU will utilize the TE position more than UNI will.

OL- UNI<ISU UNI returns only 2 offensive linemen. While the line last year gave up only 11 sacks and produced a 1000 yard rusher there is too much inexperience right now for the panthers. ISU is the opposite where it has returning linemen but they didn't have the greatest year last year.

DL- UNI=ISU UNI returns 3 starters from last year but wasn't very effective at getting to the QB. They were very good at stopping the run though. UNI has a new DL coach Paup who was an NFL defensive MVP so there is hope that more sacks will come this year. ISU will probably have the more talented and athletic line but all of that is on paper and has not been shown on the field yet.

LB- UNI>ISU UNI returns all 3 of their Linebackers who were very good at stopping the run. ISU on the other hand has to replace arguably the best LB duo in Klein and Knott. Advantage UNI.

DB- UNI<ISU This is where ISU has the most experience. Their secondary returns both key safeties and talented Corners. UNI has to replace 3 starters. UNI does have Maryland transfer CB Dorleant who had an outstanding spring game.

K/P UNI=ISU UNI returns it's kicker Sievertsen who was 10/13 with a long of 49 yards. They have a new punter this year. ISU as it seems has never had a quality kicker and it looks like it could be another long year at that position. Punter on the other hand looks like a bright spot for ISU as Van Der Kamp is one of the best in the nation.

This looks like its going to be another close game between the cyclones and panthers. I got to go with my purple cats on this one. UNI wins 24-23.

    Re: UNI Game Position Match-ups

You lost all credibility when you gave UNI the edge at the RB position.

ISU has about 5 RB's that would start for UNI.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

    Re: UNI Game Position Match-ups

I definitely disagree with the RB situation and the K/P for sure. Either way it's comparing apples to oranges considering their competition is so different. You can't honestly think that UNI's WRs are more talented than ISUs because of the numbers they put up

GTFO of here with that. Are you kidding me? This one will be close for the first three minutes until the Clones score first. From there the Paaaanthers will only be looking at the scoreboard waiting for the clock to hit 0:00 on this nightmare.

This reads not like an actual position analysis but more of a returning production comparison. Somewhat relevant but still have to factor in talented players who haven't played yet with your proven guys.

Enjoy it, panther hawks. There won't be many more matchups with ISU.

    Re: UNI Game Position Match-ups

KPanther fan you must be high. UNI was awful last year. You may have lots of returning starters but UNI's d-line will be overpowered by Iowa States O-line.

Also, are you serious about RBs? You seriously cant be, we have 5 guys with game experience and James White is in his 3rd year of starting against Big 12 competition not crappy Indiana State and South Dakota state teams. Its great to be confident in your team but saying that the only position a big 12 team is better at compared to a small MVC team you are high.

Last time we played UNI, you guys had way more talent as a whole team, and we still won. If UNI wins, please come back and let us know but I guarantee Iowa State wins by 14+. Even when Iowa State was god awful we still usually beat UNI

    Re: UNI Game Position Match-ups

As a Panther fan, I think the days of UNI competing with ISU are probably over.

Farley will have his team up for this game, no doubt, and UNI might keep it close early, but ISU's talent will take over the game.

Now looking ahead to next year, I fully expect UNI to beat Iowa. I'll honestly be disappointed if they don't as this will be the best (and possibly last) chance they'll have.

Yeah your assessment of the RB's is way off, and lack of experience doesn't mean lack of talent.
