Tony Stewart Injured in Race at Oskaloosa

I am getting texts from my brother that Tony was involved in a crash late in the race and was taken by ambulance to the hospital in town. Right now you can hear a helicopter going over Oskaloosa. Word is his leg was pretty messed up.

Probably won't be any accurate information until morning. Hope he is okay. He's only a week removed from flipping 5 times but he walked away from that one.

Broken left tibia and fibula. Apparently it was a compound fracture and required immediate surgery (hence the Life Flight helicopter). Likely out for the rest of the Sprint Cup season.

As a huge Smoke fan, it stinks.

yikes, that is terrible. These sprint cars seem so dangerous.........I wonder if NASCAR teams will start putting the kibosh on their drivers racing in them.

Stewart owns his team so he can do as he pleases.

Many of them do. Or severely limit the amount of events they can do. With Tony being the owner, I'm sure that will never happen. But sponsors are also impacted so I'm guessing if Bass Pro and Mobile 1 both said they didn't want Tony doing other events, he either wouldn't or, knowing Tony, he would find different sponsors.

Tony has been doing this for his entire 15 year Cup career and has never missed a Cup race (until Sunday).

Strange that it happened in my hometown...

That's a bad deal. No matter how you feel about anyone, you hate to see someone wreck that bad.

I was reading more after I posted and saw that yeah, many owners do prohibit this. They talked about Kasey Kahne getting into with Evernham about it a few years ago. Sucks a lot - this is usually his best time of year. I'm a Jr. fan, so we got to go through this last fall after his concussion. Hopefully Tony will forget about racing for now and focus on recovering.

Agreed. His season is over...time to get ready for Daytona next year. With a massive break like that, there is no guarantee he will be fully recovered and cleared to race come February 2014.

In general, I don't think the Owner's care as much as the sponsors do. Lowe's, for example, pays around $20 million per year to Hendrick and Jimmie Johnson's team. They want Jimmie to be the driver. If all of a sudden JJ Yaley is driving the 48, that's a big setback with exposure, wins, etc. So I see why there are concerns. But knowing how Tony is, he wouldn't take on a sponsor that wouldn't allow him to race outside of NASCAR.

Totally agree. I'm not a racing fan but I think it's pretty cool to see Tony Stewart race all over at these little tracks.

Bass Pro also sponsors his sprint car so they probably encouraged him to race at these small dirt tracks.
