Re: Worst Best Picture Oscar winner over the past 25 years?

Shakespeare In Love, Chicago, Slumdog Millionaire. You can argue Dances with Wolves, but only because of Goodfellas. Most years Dances With Wolves wins easily. They are both amzing movies. I think Shakespeare In Love and Chicago speak for themsleves. Slumdog Millionaire was just not very good in my opinion. Ridiculously overrated. Crash is another movie that should not have won, but it is a good movie, just not best picture worthy.

Isn't The Artist a foreign silent film?

I haven't seen many of the "worst" ones.

The worst one I've seen is probably Titanic.

I've probably only seen a third of these movies, but Titanic and Chicago stand out as two that I didn't think were that great.

Dances With Wolves is one of my favorites on there - Argo and The King's Speech were very good as well.

Titanic. Total garbage. James Cameron should stop making movies.

Titanic. None of the others are close to being that bad.

Re: Worst Best Picture Oscar winner over the past 25 years?

I agree with the OP that Saving Private Ryan got jobbed.

For me the worst is Shakespeare in Love. Decent movie just from a "take your wife on a date" type thing, but best picture? Come on.

I'm also going to say I thought Crash sucked.

Worst Oscar wins in recent memory:

    Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan

My number one in any category that if based on ACTUAL performance no question:

Julia Roberts winning for Erin Brockovich over Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream.

Re: Worst Best Picture Oscar winner over the past 25 years?

My picks for Oscar in that time period:

    Rain Man
    Field of Dreams
    Goodfellas
    Silence of the Lambs
Unforgiven (although A few Good Men is a very close second)
    Schindler's List
The Shawshank Redemption (Pulp Fiction second, Forest Gump third)
    Braveheart
    Fargo
Good Will Hunting (actually though As Good as it Gets was better than the Titanic as well)
    Saving Private Ryan
    The Green Mile
    Gladiator
Training Day (not actually nominated but that's because the Academy is full of idiots)
    LOTR: Two Towers
    Master & Commander
    Million Dollar Baby
    Munich
    The Departed
    No Country for Old Men
The Dark Night (went off the board here, those nominations were terrible)
    The Hurt Locker
    The Fighter
    The Help
    Argo (pretty strong year)

    I loved The English Patient.
I think that's the same year Band of Brothers came out on TV too. It was either that year or shortly afterward.

    English Patient= Fargo
    Titanic= L.A. Confidential
Shakespeare in Love=The absolute WORST best picture winner. Saving Private Ryan
    American Beauty= American Beauty
    Gladiator= Traffic
A Beautiful Mind= The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Chicago= Gangs Of New York or The Pianist
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King= Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby= Million Dollar Baby

As you can see, very rarely is the Best Picture winner actually the Best Picture of the Year.
