Worst Best Picture Oscar winner over the past 25 years?

Got in a discussion over the weekend with a group of friends about movies that you see again and think 'well that's really not as good as I remember...'. Turned to worst Oscar winning movies over the past 25 years. Curious what people think is the worst of the lot.

    Rain Man
    Driving Miss Daisy
    Dances With Wolves
    Silence of the Lambs
    Unforgiven
    Schindler's List
    Forest Gump
    Braveheart
    English Patient
    Titanic
    Shakespeare in Love
    American Beauty
    Gladiator
    A Beautiful Mind
    Chicago
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
    Million Dollar Baby
    Crash
    The Departed
    No Country For Old Men
    Slumdog Millionaire
    The Hurt Locker
    The King's Speech
    The Artist
    Argo

For me it's a tie between Driving Miss Daisy and A Beautiful Mind with Forest Gump not far behind. Not to mention Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, and Saving Private Ryan were jobbed and should have won. :)

Shakespeare in Love, but it's not my kind of movie to begin with. Never saw the Artist though.

Mine is "The Hurt Locker". It was a good movie but a lot like all the other War on Terror movies out currently.

English Patient in a landslide. No contest.

Haven't seen a lot of these. Probably lean toward Chicago.

I kind of disagree with this because of Renner and how he played the part. Yeah, it seems like they all have that guy that's unhinged but he was so incredibly unhinged in that movie that I thought it made it better than a lot of the other ones.

'Lord of the Rings' because 'Mystic River' was easily the best picture that year.

Of the ones I've seen I'd say Titanic. Checking Wikipedia the Best Picture nominees were pretty weak that year but Good Will Hunting especially is a much better movie.

Crash, Chicago (worst I have seen in that list), The Departed (all violence, and swearing, no real content), English Patient. Have not seen The Artist, Shakespeare in love or the King's speech, or Argo, but do have the DVD. Forest Gump, while very watchable, is not a great movie. Lord of the Rings: return of the King probably was an accumulation win for all 3 movies, but that whole series is a great example of movie making.

    Shakespeare in Love

I may be very biased because I think Saving Private Ryan should have won it that year. Almost every other movie on this list I've seen, or has brought up frequently except that one.

    Chicago

Shakespear in love should have not even come close to Saving Private Ryan.

Titanic, but I'm biased because Good Will Hunting is in my top 5 favorites.

I don't get the hate for Shakespeare in Love, but maybe it's more oriented towards chicks, or people who like classical literature or something. That was a really innovative retelling of the events surrounding one of our most iconic pieces of literature - Saving Private Ryan was fantastic, but there were SO many great war movies that year, it was kind of the year of the war movie. Thin Red Line is the other one I remember being huge.

    I loved The English Patient.

Maybe you just have a thing for the Fiennes brothers.

Re: Worst Best Picture Oscar winner over the past 25 years?

It has to come from the bottom half of the list. Seems like there were some greats in the early half, but not so much in the second, with a lot of the picks from the last several years not being the huge hits the ones from prior years were.
