    I'd like to know who is the nickelback for this season. Since Brackens is quicker will he stay on the field against spread teams or will it be somebody else?

    I'm out here on this creaking limb saying that the "defense has to take a step back" crowd is wrong.

    I love Jeremiah George A LOT at the MLB. But you don't just lose Jake Knott and AJ Klein and get better. Maybe we won't take a huge step back like some people think we will, but it would take an unproven defensive line to keep us from doing that. Lots of question marks and things that remain to be seen.

    I can see where you are going with this. We obviously lose two big pieces at LB but our secondary will be better IMO and not like our D Line can be worse.

    Let me just say that you and the "we will be fine" crowd could absolutely be right. I think everyone would be happy if this is the case.

    We all witnessed the letdown of this past years defense toward the end of the season when Jmac, Knott, Givens etc were all either out or playing at less than 100%. It was not good. If our defense looks like that late season version this year, I sure hope our offense improves by leaps and bounds because otherwise we are in for a long season.

    I like JG and our secondary, and knowing Wally the Wizard our defense as a whole will be better than anyone thinks it can be. Still I'm nervous to see just a small dropoff until I know that our offense can pick up the slack.

    Re: Fall Camp Preview: The defense

    Here is a question I have not heard asked much;

    Can David Irving finally realize his potential? If the light went on for him and he becomes the dominant player he has the potential to be, it would take a ton of pressure off the rest of the line, especially if he is demanding a constant double team.

    Re: Fall Camp Preview: The defense

    I agree, I think this defense probably has the talent to be be better than last years eventually, but its obviously hard to know without seeing them in action, too many guys that havn't played a lot to be confident in them. That being said I have been pleasantly surprised with our D most of the time under Wally.

    I think that there is as much talent on this defense as ISU had in 2009, so in the sense that they are going to be terrible I think people are wrong (Phil Steele is predicting bottom 5 nationally -- he is unfamiliar with Burnham and CPR's history). I also do not think the Big 12 has as much talent at the QB position than it has had in the past few years either.

    Burnham said that ideally, Iowa State will rotate its defensive line with five guys in the middle and five defensive ends. In a perfect world, that number would grow to six.

    That'll depend a lot on the offense. If the defense gets hung out to dry with constant three and outs then they might end up very poorly.

    Jake Knott was lost after the Baylor game (a quarter of the season was played without him) not like we are going into this season blindly.

    I am curious about this as well. Rogers was playing it some in the spring, but if he ends up starting at CB, I'm not sure it would be wise to move him inside to the nickelback in certain situations, and stick a cold CB like Richardson or Lynn out on the edge. It would be nice if Brackens could just stay out there for 3 downs.

    This question was asked by Bobby LeGesse and Rhoads said Irving had the potential to be the best DE ISU has had since Reggie Hayward.
