Differences between Pistol and Triple Option Offense?

Can someone please enlighten me of the differences between the "Pistol" and "Triple Option" (like the one Georgia Tech runs).

Pistol is just a formation or a set of formations really, a kind of shotgun/singleback hybrid although some run with multiple backs. Triple option is a specific play type. You could run the triple option out of the pistol though.

The Pistol is just a formation; You can run the triple option from it.... Georgia Tech runs the Triple Option from the Flexbone formation, typically putting one of the wing players in motion.

I think the big thing that you will see, or hopefully see out of the pistol is more of an attacking running game, as opposed to the deception running game from the read option. Everything will be closer to the LOS when the play starts, which I would like to see. I look forward to seeing how it works, as the zone read was not very effective for ISU.

Not sure what was more effective for usd the last five years: the run or the pass. Comments?

If we don't find a passing game of some sort no running offense is going to work for us. The zone read works when the defense can't put 8 in the box because they can go single coverage no problem on the receivers. When the defense can send more than you can block they can bait you right into where they want you to go.

Unless if there is another running back or a receiver in motion the pistol only uses a traditional zone read and is a double option opposed to a triple option. The dive back in both systems has a similar role however, it's just that in the pistol he is further away from the line.

The zone read is still run out of the pistol the move to the pistol changes nothing in this regard.

You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment.

The moral: you gain more by not being stupid, than you do by being smart. Smart gets neutralized by other smart people. Stupid does not.

What changes is that everything starts a little closer to the LOS, so there is less time to try to trick someone into the wrong defensive read and there is less time for the teams to crash in from the outside and blow the play up. I suspect we are going to see a lot more run at you than around you with the pistol too. Other than that I agree. Hopefully this will at least eliminate some of the 5-6 yard losses that destroy drives.
