    Re: Major League Soccer expansion

Obviously anything can change, but through my profession I'm fairly ahead of the curve and involved with the inside discussions. Minneapolis, St. Louis, Atlanta and Miami can pretty much pencil in a MLS franchise. And it's happening sooner than 2020.

    Re: Major League Soccer expansion

I thought there was a FIFA rule stating that sanctioned leagues couldn't have more than 20 teams (EPL, La Liga, and Serie A all have 20, Bundesliga has 18). Perhaps we're getting closer to promotion/relegation in MLS.

And, being where I live, I've heard a lot of chatter that Detroit is really angling for one of those new teams.

This is what I'd wonder, is there even the talent base that can support more teams at a reasonable level?

The MLS can make itself the best league in North America, and entry point for players from Concacaf Region who want to go to Europe. Its not the talent. Nobody can name more than a handful of players in the league right now anyway. I think the English model of 20 team divisions just isn't big enough for MLS, expansion in inevitable.

Detroit? Seriously, who would put anything in Detroit right now?

Don't you have to have some kind of decent competition to make the league better and try to send more players to Europe?

Really, St. Louis with no ownership group or independent stadium over Orlando, which is tremendously successful in the NASL with good ownership and a huge fanbase? I mean it could happen but from here it looks likely Orlando would get one.

If i remember correctly, a large study done recently shows Soccer to be the 2nd most popular sport in america among people 14-24...so as teens elect to travel down that path, the talent base should grow. In addition to international talent, the league shouldn't have much of a problem with players.

This is correct, the MLS would have to go to promotion/relegation to abide by current Fifa standards.

From what I've read, Miami looks like the only destination in Florida, and Beckham is interested in owning his own team with Miami as a possibility. I would love to see a team in the Twin Cities, I like Minnesotans a lot more the Mizzourans.

I remember that same thing. Not sure how they are getting around that. I can't imagine for the buy in they are requiring team owners will let promotion/relegation happen. Although I with it would it would be awesome to watch.

As far as cities that deserve a team, I think St. Louis deserves a team. I remember watching something about the US team that got back into the world cup. Most of those guys on that team were from in and around StL. Basically at the time it was the only US city that enjoyed soccer.

Soccer is the most played organized sport in America for total population, I could definitely see it to be true. I'm not finding sources on my lunch break though.

Orlando is a shoe-in, I think. The ownership is prepared and from the interview I heard on Soccer Morning, they expect to have stadium funding figured out in a month or so.
